Bill, I dug the hell out of those recordings, sounds great! I can't believe it was just one mic and you guys did it yourself. Wow! Way to go.

BTW, nice call with BF4 - my fave is "Let Her Dance" - sends shivers through me every time I hear it. But very marginally 'surf' or 'garage', more of a Beatles-sort of thing.

Anyway, i give a big thumbs up both on the vocals and the recording! If you end up with a sax player and another guitarist, watch out! That'll be SOMETHING.

Klas,
I'm at work now, but once I get home I'll give your track a listen too. I always liked the Magic Touch. Thanks for the compliments man.

Jeff,
Thanks a lot. I want to be really careful and keep the guitar tones in the vocal stuff surf influenced, and heavy on the reverb and even double pick some of the lead lines, Eddie Bertrand and Dick Dale used to do that very well. I think it keeps things a little different for us, but we are still a surf band. Atleast around here know ones doing anthing like this so it may set us apart a bit. I dunno.... maybe not...it is fun though! Laughing

Ivan,
I'm glad you dug it, we really can't sing. But I think most of the surf bands that tried to couldn't either, so maybe our lack of vocal talent will work for us. Smile

I think we all need to watch out for the Thunderchiefs. These guys can sing and from what they've told me about their plans it sounds like they are going to be unbelieveable.

We used more than one mic, I'm sorry if that was confusing.
We had one mic on each of the amps, an overhead for drums and a room mic. We sang into the room mic. We did a play back with just the room mic, I don't have a copy of that, but I thought that sounded even better. We only had two hours to set up and record this, so I'd like to try it again. You are right "Let Her Dance" wasn't very garage like at all, but "Keep on Dancing" which evolved into "Let Her Dance" was. If you dig the BF4 stuff you need to check out the early demos and El Paso tapes. Some of his songs before they got to the studio in the mid 60s were really rockabilly/surf influenced. He did a great impersonation of Eddie Cochran and Buddy Holly too. The ironic thing is from what I've gathered, Bobby didn't really like the Beatles. On a live track of Peggy Sue he says, "this is an old Buddy Holly song, that the Beatles are trying to imitate." But you're right all the stuff that was released in the mid 60s was heavy on the Beatles influence, or so one would think, I think it's more of a Buddy Holly influence beehind the writting, who was also an influence on the Beatles. I think the mid-60s BF4 studio stuff is more or a victum to mid 60s recording techniques and producers who were probably after the Beatles sound. Bobby didn't even want to record "the Magic Touch", but he did anyway. I think he was certainly depressed with what was going on with the BF4 and they were at the point of break up during his death.

The Reluctant Aquanauts did some low quality recordings at our drummers studio at our last rehearsal. I put them up on our Myspace, "Dirty Robber" and "Justine" One mic on both amps, one over the drums, and we sang into the room mic which is a vintage shure 55. We were trying to get a Crossfires sound.

Really nice Bill. I like the energy. Keep it up.

Thanks Bill,
"Keep on Dancing" is bitchin!

I'm Shaun Young.

I guess I need to start signing up on these message boards as Shaun.
The Krupanut nick comes from my car club, the Kontinentals who started calling me that because I play the drums for a few swing bands and I'm nuts about Gene Krupa.
I use it as a username on a bunch of forums, easy to remember.

Shaun,
I think "the Krupanauts" would be a great name for a surf band.

Also, anyone digging "Miserlou" really need to check out Bobby Fuller 4's take on it. Soundclip below contains the first 2 minutes of the almost 6 minutes long (!) full version.

Aw geez Bill, I don't know about that. Embarassed

The one vocal tune we cut last Sunday sounds like a hillbilly singer (I can't help it) with a surf band trying to make a Beatles record. Laughing

Klas, I rember the first time I heard the BF4 version of Miserlou, I had to pick myself up off the floor!

The Thunderchiefs

Bobby was an excellent surf guitarist, even though Jim Reese didn't seem to think there was much worth in being a surf guitarist, but with his hair and choice of guitars I can't take that too seriously Laughing

Hahaha, yeah I also remember getting very excited first time I heard that nasty barbwire lead guitar intro!

I actually like the vocals. They sound country w/o being hokey like Les Claypool. . .

That's a great idea.

Will do,
Are you the drummer for Satans Pilgrims? Is that what spskins stands for?
Forgive my ignorance; I didn't really post much on the yahoo list.

No I am a drummer who plays guitar with the Thunderchiefs.
Bobby Trimble (Big Sandy, Sleazy Surfers, Gallows) is drumming for the T-chiefs.

I'm a drummer who plays guitar with the T-chiefs.

I've played drums for a bunch of Rockabilly acts (Marti Brom, The Horton Brothers) and Swing combos through the years and still gig quite a bit with them. I Love the drums as much as playing guitar and singing.
Jake of all trades master of none.

I'm so glad Mike is pickin' with us, he needs to be heard.
He's such a precise player and a master of the genre.
I tell ya he's been writing some great tunes lately too.

Hey Ted!

I signed on here a couple of days ago (or was that yesterday?) The missus and I should be in Memphis in May for the Stomp - we need to hook up! Say hey to the other Pilgrims for me!
