So just a quick shout out to see if maybe I'm not the only one that's had this experience. Showed up for soundcheck the other night and the bassplayer calls out a song where I play rhythm, and just so happens, is the only song ever where I have decided to use the ryhthm circuit on my jazzmaster. It's a perfect song for it and it makes dialing in the tone easy, makes the lead stand out, alls well. So we do the song for sound check and then put down the guitars, turn off the amps and go get some food. Come back in a few hours later, turn on the amps, grab my Jazzmaster and go warm up. Well of course I have the opening song and after doing the opening glissando, realize that something is horribly wrong. Of course it's the rhythm circuit that I completely forgot about, and it took me 4 SONGS IN to realize that I was playing what probably sounded like a big bunch of toilet paper. I knew there was something wrong and was changing my amp and my pedals, only to figure it out in the middle of a solo, wherein I flipped the switch and the most treble piercing shrill tone came out of my now jacked up settings.
Of the 15 years I've been playing that jazzmaster I've never done that before. But it only takes once...I hope.

I had a similar thing happen when I gigged with a Jaguar for the first time. Wiped the guitar down at the end of a set, which I always do. First up on the next set was "Let's Go Trippin'/Miserlou" back to back with me on lead (I usually played rhythm). I must have flipped the rhythm/lead switch by accident when wiping the guitar down. It sounded like complete crap and I had no idea what was wrong. That damn switch is not in the normal line of sight when playing standing up with a strap. Our usual lead player figured it out and kept yelling "the switch, the switch" but I was so fazed I just kept going. So you're not alone

Did that just this Friday at a gig! Luckily I figured it out mid-song... I gotta cutout the Townshend windmills.

I would be surprised if there is a Jazzy/Jag player who HASN'T done this!

I always tune using the neck pickup (and no pick, as recommended by the Sonic Research folks who make my tuner), and have just left it in that position by accident, then wonder why my tone has no BAWLS. Very easy to forget.

Me too, exact same story as Morphballio. It's easier on the tuner when the upper harmonics don't confuse it.
Do some of you guys put something in the switch, like a piece of rubber or something, so to not have those kinds of accidents live? I heard J. Mascis does it.
BTW Morph, How do you like your TurboTuner? I'm thinking of getting one.

I think it is only a matter of time before this happens to all Jaguar and Jazzmaster players. Another problem is turning off both pickup switches on your Jaguar! However, I've modded my Jaguar so the pickups are wired in series when both switches are 'off'. This way, my guitar actually gets much louder if I accidentally hit both switches.

I know this is a noob thing, but I just recently changed strings on my Jaguar to 12's and put the old bridge back on (that I had temporarily swapped with another guitar). Got it all set up/tuned up, and . . . OH NO! What happened to the great tone I was getting before? Like I had somehow messed around with whatever delicate balance I had going before these "changes". What happened to that bright, snappy sound I loved? Did the heavier strings make the difference? I'M GOING BACK TO 11's!
Oh . . . I had accidentally bumped the rhythm switch.
Speaking of the on/off problem--I think that's why Dave Wronsky uses a strat/tele switch instead. I know that's why Johnny Marr has one, and the mod will be standard on his upcoming signature Jag.

It's solid, easy to see in low lighting, and was very intuitive for me. Love it.

Jeremy- yeah, I got the stomp version. I paid the full $130 plus s/h for it directly from the manufacturer, and would do it again if it were stolen, as they say on HC. They tend to not appear for much less on the used market, so I guess that can be considered a testament to their product.

I've done the same thing with the volume set to zero for the rhythm circuit. Get up on stage, flip the amp's stand by switch..... nothing. After checking every cable connection, amp health, pedals, etc. GodDamned rhythm circuit switch!

Thanks Morphball for the answer. I gonna get it, as it's also cheaper and much more compact than the Peterson.

Just one of several reasons that many of us consider "SNAFU" and "Jazzmaster" in the same sentence to be redundant.

I used to do this too. I've since wired my Jag rhythm circuit to be neck only and bypass the pots. I've completely removed the rhythm circuit from my Jazzmaster. I wonder if it's possible to put a fuzz circuit up in there?

Actually I was looking into Curtis Novak's mods that he does for the Jazzmaster. He had the rhythm circuit as an overdrive humbucker boost.
He used to have the schematic but now I can't find it.
Interesting!

At one time, Steve Soest was talking about trying to put a Roland Guitar Synth module in there. Don't know if he ever did or not.
