Cool, looks like Sundazed finally sorted out the rights to release these. However, a bit strange that they chose to make this a "very limited" release only, when they also state that these albums are "among our most requested titles for years and years".

http://www.sundazed.com/shop/recordstoreday-all.php

Also up for grabs is the Golden Breed soundtrack featuring Davie Allan. Still no Ghouls reissue though.

Klas, I think it’s probably one of Sundazed most requested because of the tie-in to Rat Fink and "limited" because they know this is a fan-based item. Coincidentally, I went to Amoeba Records today (greatest record store ever) and they had them. Pricey! $15.98 each. Still, I had to buy them even though I have them on vinyl. I was hoping for some liner notes but there were none. The packaging is nice and does list you who played on what... Wrecking Crew, ‘natch. If I had to recommend one of the three released it would be Surfink! because it contains 4 groovy instros… Surfink, Little Fink Rides Again, Phantom Surfer and Surfink Blus. For those looking for classic sounding surf you won't find it here. These albums were aimed at little kids, but these 4 very cool instros sound like tunes that you would hear in a Frankie and Annette Beach Party Movie. That's because it’s the same players on that stuff too. Spin this disc, break out an old Roth kit and some glue, and you’ll be 11 years old again.

Yeah, I think another reason they got so many requests for these is that the albums were almost released by Sundazed back in 2006 and then withdrawn in the last minute. I for one did contact them about it after that.

Sounds like a steal compared to that I paid something like $75 for a used copy of The Rat Fink Collection double CD set just a few years ago...

I was hoping for some liner notes but there were none.

That's strange since the liner notes were already written and done by Stephen McParland for the 2006 releases according to the album descriptions on Amazon:

"Each disc features fully-restored vintage album artwork, dead-accurate mastering from the original analog reels, plus new liner notes by West Coast music authority Stephen McParland."

Yeah, I remember those. As much of a Roth fan as I am, I couldn't bring myself to pay that much. I was lucky enough to find the original LP's at pretty resonable prices and a friend ripped them to CD for me before I got my own ripper.

They definetly left out the liner notes. Probably to save money on the packaging. There's a very short paragraph on the back of the case and the names of the players inside, that's it. Stephan J. McParland is quite an authority on this stuff. I would have loved to have read what he had.

I picked up the Surfink LP reissue. Cool stuff! The instros are cool and I like the cheesy vocal tunes.
Sound quality on the disc is great, too.
Really wanted to get all three, but it wasn't in my budget.

I bought this back in the '90s, when it was still in print - I had no idea it's been recently going for such a huge price! I probably would have sold it if I had. Smile I suspect it's not nearly as expensive now that the Sundazed reissued it....

I got one of those recently in a bulk music buy,
probably paid 5 or 10 bucks for it.

The Rat Fink Collection double CD was only something like $15 when it was still in print back in the mid 90's. Before I won my copy some years ago, I saw copies go on eBay for $125. Nice (VG+ or better) original vinyl LPs of each album usually went for about the same.

I bet the whole story on these 3 albums can be found in McParland's quite recent Real Gone Gassers book. I've been thinking about ordering it (together with his Cycle Cinema & Sickle Sounds biker movie book), but they are pretty expensive and then there's the shipping cost from Australia and an eventual 25% import tax on top of that. Ouch...

Verry interesting!

I wish to thank you all for the insight on who played on these recordings.
Did I see Dr John listed as a member of the Wrecking Crew?
cadman

Where did you see that? That doesn't really sound right, I think he was mostly still hanging around at J&M studios playing with the New Orleans usual suspects at that time

I think he meant Leon Russell, the other freaky bearded piano player. An honest mix-up, actually. And yes, Leon Russell was a Wrecking Crew regular and played on these Roth albums.

Luckily I live in SoCal were we have two major record shows a month. I've honestly never payed more than around 50 bucks for a collectable vinyl LP. That's my cut-off. I'm amazed at what stuff goes for on ebay sometimes.

I thought so too, but then a quick search for Mac Rebennack (aka Dr. John) and the "Wrecking Crew" gives a lot of hits. Surprising.

Ah yes, he indeed played on Wrecking crew stuff according to Wiki. I must admit I mostly know about the surf/hot rod stuff which featured Leon Russell. I wonder what Dr. John played on?

Yeah everything I find just lists him as a once-member, can't find any actual credits

Storm Surge of Reverb: Surf & Instro Radio

Leon Russell yea that could have been it, and makes more sense.

Dug these up and scanned them from ROD & CUSTOM MAGAZINE FEB '64. Thought you Roth fans out there would dig 'em!
