Stumbled on these live clips of LOS TWANG MARVELS. Beautiful stuff. Love their distinctly Spanish classical guitar style. Great arrangement and playing. They look sharp too. Thought I’d share…

INDEED!!!!
This is some of the best modern surf out there. Period. What's happening on the European front is really raising the bar for everyone right now.

I LOVE it when surf bands arrange classical tunes. Time to listen to SG101 Podcast #6 again!
What's even more insane in regard to that last clip is that it's their arrangement of one of the most well-known J.S. Bach keyboard pieces of all time, Toccata and Fugue in d minor (BWV 565). I'm sure most will instantly recognize the original as "that creepy horror organ music."
Check out this Youtube of the legendary Karl Richter rocking it old-school.

Also, for anyone that's interested in a different kind of arrangement, check out Jacques Loussier--the undisputed king of Bach Jazz interpretation.

Sorry....back to Los Twang! Marvels!!!

I love those clips too. Alex is such a great player--one of our genres "virtuosos". I finally just bought "Jungle of Twang" after hearing all the great reviews.

Agreed. Alex is an excellent player/writer. Good to see you got turned on to these guys Norm!

I must admit I didn't know much about this band. After discovering these clips, I'm definetly a fan. I take it there stuff is mostly out of print?

Norm, they're RIGHT up your alley - both Alex and Marisol were taught by.... ROBERT FRIPP! YES, OF KING CRIMSON! Yep. I shit you negatively.

Twisted Evil

You should be able to find quite a few of their albums out there. Here is a great, domestically-available collection of the material from their first EP and LP, plus some bonus 'new' stuff. Jungle of Twang was their second album, and it's a masterpiece.

I've conducted a lengthy interview with Alex which will be featured in the next Continental, out hopefully in November or early December.

Thanks Man! I believe it! I figured they might have studied Classical Spanish guitar. I've never seen anyone in the surf world play like that. In fact, their version of Toccatta and Fugue can hardly be considered surf. It's concert hall music played on Jaguars! I will surely be picking up their stuff.

wow what a deal,
everyone on SG101 and the world should own this cd!!

I received Jungle of Twang yesterday. The playing and songwriting is excellent. The stand out tracks for me are Cumana, Bali Hai, Tunisian Moon, Surf Dilemma and Siboney. I must say the more “exotic” and less surfy tunes on this album is the stuff I liked the most. I would love to hear an up-tempo Exotica or Spanish themed album from these guys! Hmm, Ernesto Lecuona Songbook, maybe? Hope to see these guys and girl live some day. And BTW, this shipping from interpunk.com was lightning fast.

I would love to hear that! I heard that The Madeira will have a Lecuona song on their new CD- not a typical one from the surf canon. It's time to dig deeper into Ernesto's songbook!

On topic- Los Twang! Marvels = amazing and wonderful!

Yes, Lecuona has many great tunes that can be done. Plus, they seem to be very good at adapting stuff and including more of the original piece and not just making a standard Ventures-type arrangement. Judging by what they did with Toccatta and Fugue, I think they could pull it off. If you listen to the Lecuona’s original Malaguena it has lots of cool parts that aren’t in the typical “surf” version. I would love to hear what they would come up with if they took a more up-tempo Exotica approach like they did with Cumana and Siboney rather than a surf treatment.

I'm very glad to hear you're enjoying the CD, Norm. LTM are able to pull off something that very few, if any, other bands can - they have the garagey/fun vibe at the same time as exhibiting a great deal of musical virtousity, and being quite obvious with it. I don't know how they do it, but I think the latin approach may have something to do with it - virtuousity in service of danceable, fun music is quite common in Latino cultures, it seems. It's also a reflection of Alex's personality in particular - he's such a up, enthusiastic guy and loves to have a good time, his musical skills always in service of that, it seems.

I love all the songs you listed, and am just blown away with what they did on Bali Hai - they definitely upped the spooky, exotica factor. Cumana is also too cool for words. One track that's just stunning but which I think takes a bit to grow on a listener is the opening one, Sea of Glory - such depth of composition and playing virtuousity. Give that one a shot further.

I think they've recorded most of an album's worth of Bach pieces, but the project is in a bit of a limbo right now. I've heard a few other pieces, and they're just amazing. I really hope it sees the light of day soon.

Finally, Ferenc's is right - for our new album, we recorded Lecuona's Jungle Drums, a track never before covered by a surf band, as far as I know (though it was covered in '60-'61 by the Krew Kats, a band featuring Brian Bennet and Licorice Locking, later of the Shadows, and Big Jim Sullivan, future studio legend and teacher of Ritchie Blackmore and 'Little' Jimmy Page, his studio compadre - our version is our own and completely different than theirs, though).

I agree. They put off a really fun vibe while also tackling a lofty goal such as adapting a piece by Bach. Something like that can come off really pretentious but they pull it off quite naturally while adding a distinctly Latin approach. A very unique band to say the least. Lecuona’s stuff often has a melancholy vibe that's present in a lot of older Latin music and the tunes sound great played on guitar even though they were written on piano. Looking forward to hearing your take on Jungle drums. I’m thinking Jeff need’s to talk the Marvels into coming over for the next SG101 Con!

I don't think anyone has this one - Surf Dilemma is one of my favorites on this album.

Another favorite is the track right after this, "Sad on Mondays." Very melancholy, very pretty. I never get tired of it.

And, of course, "Sea of Glory" is an epic. Is there a clip of them playing this live? I didn't see one on Youtube right away.
