To me there is nothing that fits the hot rod car scene more than surf guitar. I am a hobby surf guitarist, but my other interest is in hot rod /sports cars.
I want to start hitting the car show circuit playing surf guitar, I already run sound for a few local events , plus and a member of a couple clubs. Any pointers on where to begin? I don't do beach boys type thing, I am more along the lines of dick dale - fast agressive trem picking, lots of power and volume.
Also could some of you do me a favor? I am trying to start a forum (hot rod car based) and I would appreciate if a few of you would come on over and post - be it about surf guitar or whatever.

Welcome Z28fan,
Glad to have you here. One of the bands I'm in, the Meshugga Beach Party, recently played a car show, only it wasn't hot rods, it was art cars. Seeing how we dress up in costumes ourselves (Rabbis) it seemd only fitting.
I think we can't really advise you unless we know your situation. Are you in a band or collaborating with anyone? Reality is that most people will prefer to hear the classics, of which there are many, so you could easily get a set together. Do you have an outboard reverb? It's a necessity for authentic Dick Dale style playing. Tell us more about your guitar playing.

No band, I've been in plenty of bands and they always run into the typical band politics. So this is a loner type deal - biggest problem I have is that I live in Northern MI. and the closest city of any size is a 150 miles from me. What few people that play in my area, are stuck in the "jenny jenny, Taking care of business" crap that I have no patiance for. I like surf for a few reasons.
1) I don't sing in it.
2) It isn't really mainstream
3) you can play fast, loud and aggressive.
I know a fair amount of the standard surf classics, probably not enough though. How long should I be able to cover - Do you guys play for 4 hours?
As far as on outboard reverb, no I have no effects external or in my amp - I play dry. I wouldn't be opposed to buying a couple if I needed.
On another note - art cars? thats sort of intertesting

hot rods, sports cars , muscle - trying to cover the whole gambit. Yes even a TANK if someone had one.
Oh you meant a reverb tank ( a bit of humor on my part) - yes I know -
How much do they normally run - I know almost nothing about effects, except I know I don't want a cheesy pedal that the battery runs dead all the time.

We got hooked up on the Hunnert Car Pile Up back in 2004 which is about as big as it gets for car shows around here. We then got hooked up on the Madfabricators #3 DVD and soundtrack after this. I think the exposure is great from car shows.

I would say that typical "hot rod music" can be found on many of the 1963-64 car concept albums on labels such as Crown or Del-Fi, recorded by studio groups like The Deuce Coupes, The De-Fenders, various Jerry Cole projects etc. There is some great stuff among those albums but IMO most of it isn't that hot.
And speaking of Cole, Ace Records has just released a selection culled from his many Crown albums, called... Hot Rod Twangin'.

The new Ace Comp. was put together by Mike Vernon here in Austin and it's a good over view of all of Jerry Coles get "thrown in the studio and make a record in 2 hours" LPs.
In fact I never knew the Billy Boyds twangin' guitars record was Jerry.
That one has some cool Jump blues style playing on it.
He told me a funny story about his version of Pipeline that he catches so much flak for screwing up the melody.
When they went in to cut that track they didn't even have a copy of the Chanteys record in the studio with them.
Of course no one on the session had ever played Pipeline in the lives and Jerry had just heard it on the radio a few times.
So they just copied it as close as they're collective memory could get.

and now back to our topic.......
Q How much does a tank reverb cost?
A Last time I looked a new Fender tank reverb will set you back 4 bills, but check out Gomez Amps first. You might want to get an outstanding combo amp with a great 'verb as Fender tank reissues have been known to have "issues". I hear Gomez Amps my launch its own tank reverb unit. Contact Dario at Gomez Amps.
I hear you on the surf music thing, but I think you'll be better off putting a band together to make the most of the music. It needs, at a minimum, lead and rhythm guitars, bass and drums. The Mermen work well with just lead, bass and drums but they are the exception.
Good luck and keep us posted on your progress.

Another event that takes place annually is the Hot Rod Hula Hop in Columbus, Ohio. It is a Tiki/Hot Rod event with surf, exotica, psychobilly & garage music:
Website from last year is here:
http://www.fraternalorderofmoai.org/events.html
An updated site will be available soon.
Last year, the Madeira, The Crimson Ghosts, Fisherman, The Cryptokats and Knuckel Drager played. Great show! I believe the event will be held on the third week of August again this year (though not confirmed)...so come down and check it out if you are able!

Ok thanks for the info - I would love to throw a full band together but I live in F@#$%@G Northern MI. I don't think anyone here has even heard of surf.
I'll look into the reverb tank -
Now ,with that tank can I run lines out to two separate amps?
