anyone here by any chance know what effects rip used?

www.surfintheeye.com

Rip was very much a traditionalist. In the early days, I believe he plugged into his Twin Reverb / JBL amp direct. Then he picked up an outboard Fender tank (probably a '65) then it was tank into his Showman Amp. At some point he inclued an echo pedal and Ivan would probably know which one (s) he used. In the studio recording tracks for Locked and Loaded, Rip prefered the sound of an Ampeq Reverb-o-rocket amp and later bought one to play out live. I believe most of the Locked and Loaded tracks were cut with his Japanese re-issue Jaguar which had the pickups replaced with Seymour Duncans he bought from me for $20. His original guitar was the blue Mex Strat.

He did have "THE SOUND."

Not a day goes by that I don't think about those guys.

Traditional........speak softly and play through a big blonde amp. Did I mention that I still like big blonde amps?

Eddie,
Thanks so much for taking the time to share your personal memories, anecdotes and information.
It's a real testimony to the important legacy of both Rip and Spanky that people still discuss them, their recordings, performances, philosophies and gear.
Incidentally, during the recent 'on air' we did up in Seattle in the KEXP studios, both Dave and Marty used the in-house Ampeg Reverb-o-Rockets. I was amazed at how fantastic those amps sounded!

I'm pretty sure the delay pedal Rip was using the last few years was the Dan-Echo from Danelectro. He had also transitioned to flat wound stings, and preferred nylon Jim Dunlop .88s for a pick.

Other than that, Eddie pretty much has Rip's rig pegged, as near as I recall.

Yep, Jet, that was it. Spanky used Rip's pedal when he took over on lead. He was having a hum problem with the DanEcho pedal that I traced (ha, had to include that) to a ground loop situation with his wall wart power supply. After that Spanky was on his way. Split amps when possible and played lead like he had done it all along.
