Just curious?

I know based on the threads I read many bands here perform solely Surf or Instro; any other musicians play mixed sets (Surf, Rock-A-Billy, Blues, etc..)?

METEOR IV on reverbnation

All the time. If you don't do all sorts of stuff here, you won't get out much Smile

He who dies with the most tubes... wins

Surf Daddies

You Pretty much have to mix the songs...Not to many straight Surf
Bands out there !

If you play crappy music you will be in an empty room in 15 minutes. As we all know, a surf band can pack a room of 400 and keep them enthralled for hours.

400? Thats the county fair

most bars are fire rated for 50-100

the Great Scott in boston is rated for 250 people...

I dont thing Ive ever played the county fair at 400

We dont' really have cover bands in Seattle. Venues offer up original music and the genre doesn't really matter. Owners don't ask bands to play specific sets.

Yeah, we do Surf, Blues, Rock-A-Billy and original Instro. Even that's a tough sale??

In Denver there are bands that try to play the whole evening themselves in one particular style, and bands that are willing to pair up with a band in a different, but comfortably similar style. Sometimes it's the same band on different nights. Usually pair-ups are to get a vocal group in the mix.

It don't think you have to do the juke box thing or try to please everyone. It seems to me that the core of surf is a collection of classical songs done in a certain style. The good bands seem to be telling me that they've mastered the style and here's what their adaptation of it sounds like applied to a bunch of stuff they know I'll like. Some of it's already on records somewhere labelled surf, and some of it they'd like to show me could be. But that only matters if I care. The point is, it's good stuff.

On the flip side, locally there are rockabilly bands, etc., that throw a surf song or two into their sets, sometimes to suit themselves, sometimes just because they know there are a couple of people there who will enjoy their take on those songs. I think they always count on the rest of the crowd going with the band's sound or relating to the novelty factor. It does give them a chance to show they know who's in the crowd and have the chops to vary their material. But I don't think they step out of character to do it.

There's no harm in doing surf as a re-enactment/cover thing, and at times there's a lot of demand for it, but I think most of the time you'll be more satisfied and satifying if you go for a style (surf or not) and your own repertoire of things (surf or not) that you can make fit it. You may have to prostitute yourself a bit on style or selection (or vocals) to make yourself commercial. That sort of depends on the environment, the competition and your moral principles.

Pretty much they ask you what you can play before you are hired !

I think surf lends itself pretty well to be paired with another genre to make it more interesting. Personally, I think Surf/Punk or Surf/Post-Rock (I think The Mermen) are pretty awesome combinations.

This is an adventure.

You need to mix the songs..If not nobody will be pleased !

There are no limits to music. I like playing all kinds and have sat-in with several different types of bands. I really think that old-school honky-tonk country, mariachi music, and surf go well together. I can also take all kinds of songs I love and arrange them for surf-instrumentals. I've played New Wave, punk, and straight up rock and roll and I'd be lying if I said I didn't incorporate what I've learned from playing different styles of music into surf music.

surf/punk/mid 60's garage rock makes a good mix

on a side note....one of our local eateries went out of business this week. they had live music once a week, mostly playing 80's covers and the usual buffet/eagles stuff. the bass player told me he's really bummed they never got up with me to do a surf set. sigh Sigh too late now.

Traditional........speak softly and play through a big blonde amp. Did I mention that I still like big blonde amps?

we have a very talented local guy here that plays some acoustic solo gigs. most of the songs he covers aren't the usual stuff but he says he has to do 'those' songs to keep people happy. he's nice enough to save them for after we leave Laughing

But there was a very good English band by the name of the Eagles back in the day! They were, of course, in the shadows of the Shadows. Smile

Kind of a requirement if you want to work often and get paid well. We mix in enough of "those" songs with our Surf/Instro (about 50-60% of our sets) stuff and songs from othr genres that WE like. to keep people happy. I'm surprised how receptive people are to the Surf stuff if you give 'em a break. You just can't overwhelm them.

You pretty much show up with a pre written song list...
Seems like every Bar owner want to edit the play list..
They always want an AC/DC song ???
