Anyone know if the old 60's gray and black spotted mustang cases will fit a 50s reissue strat? Are the cases made too short or are they big enough? There's a real vintage one for sale on craigslist for 100 bucks, seems like a good deal since a new Fender one is over 100, and this one is in pretty good shape. Bit of a drive to find out that it won't fit, though. Thanks! Last edited: Sep 01, 2013 04:19:29 |

I don't think so. I tried a 1974 strat and it is just slightly too wide (from treble side of body to bass side of body) to fit well. It could be forced but then the case wouldn't latch easily. It isn't too long from bridge to headstock though. A Mustang does fit in a strat case OK. |

Ok, didn't even think about the width. Do strat body sizes vary or are they all the same? |

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Bang!Mustang! yet. Great surf sound. |

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Bang!Mustang! yet. Great surf sound. I'm surprised nobody has mentioned The Kilaueas! yet. Great surf sound. The orange Mustang is my BECK Mustang. Special from Japan. With nice matching head. A few days ago I found one and bought it! A OBM Fender Mustang (also with matching head for sure!). The 71 Competition Reissue. And this Mustang is the first Fender guitar since a few years where I do NOT think to change the pickups! Very good resonating guitar with the nice "surf vibe"! Easy to play. I had a few Mustangs in the last 13 years and sold them again... But I will keep the Beck model and the 71 Comp.! Twang cheers! Ralf Kilauea |

Hey, the Kilaueas get a pretty good Bang! Mustang! sound. Yes, the Beck sounds amazing in both (all four?) hands. Thanks for your mini review of the Mustangs. I am getting interested in these guitars, and there are many Japanese reissues to choose from. We can rename this thread: Fender Mustang good surf guitar...YES! |

The Challengers actually played with a Mustang back in the day, as well as the Avengers IV and a host of other awesome First Wave bands. That being the case I think the Mustang is definitely a solid Surf Music instrument. I am a little biased though, because I do have a full Tattoo replica of my '64 mustang on my arm!! Jeremy |

Maybe it is just me but I prefer the sound of the Jag/Jazzmaster over the Mustang, I had a reissue, and just never became attached to it, mine just sounded weak and lifeless. I am not downing the mustang, I actually wish I hadn't have traded it now that it is gone, anyway I attached a video of the Carioca utilizing a Jazzmaster. |
