Looking for a cost effective modern alternative to a Moog Syth? I intend to mainly use it for sound effects and such.
Just don't have the $$$ for a Moog so...?

I suggest the MicroKorg. Our key player uses one. They are very versitile and you can find them for around 250 used. —THE KBK ... This is the last known signal. We offer Sanctuary. www.thekbk.com |

Yeah, MicroKorg if you want sound effects. A Moog is not something you'd want to buy for sound effects. Or you could get a midi keyboard and some soft synth software. Some have really good analog synth replicas. |

Using Midi and a Laptop is always an option. At the same time, it can be a royal pain in the ass to set up if you are stuck in the middle of a 3 band bill. Even more, laptops are much less road sturdy. I am paranoid about having one destroyed while out on the road. Before we had a key player, I used to use a laptop with a program called BacktoBasics to trigger samples live. It was a cost-effective way to do the job but I was so happy to bring a key player with a sampler on board. —THE KBK ... This is the last known signal. We offer Sanctuary. www.thekbk.com |

Sorta depends on what the OP meant by "Sound Effects and such" (haha, pretty vague) If its to trigger already recorded/prepared sound samples, then Jake's right. That isnt the right tool for the job. I havent used a MicroKorg but I hear good things about it. I always used a laptop with midi keyboard/controller but it is a pain to set up and does have the "oh crap it might error out or break" factor. But if you want to generate your own sounds, then a Moog can help you do that. there are cheap VST emulators too, but again, thats setting up laptops with midi controllers. |

A laptop would be a no-o for our band, I need something small I can mount nearby my rig as I'll be playing guitar as well. To clarify, we do some Sci-Fi stuff as well as Surf and Spagehtii Western type instro so I'm looking for something that will provide intro / outro sound effects yet capable of some lite duty keyboard synth. I'll check out the Micro Korg btw. Thanks — |

The MicroKorg won't do what you want. It is a decent cheap synth that has sound effects pre-loaded. You are looking for audio samples, not really sound effects. Laptop w/midi keyboard is your best bet then. |

I know it isn't exactly what you're looking for, but something you could use purely for intro/outro samples would be a Digitech Jamman. It's a looper pedal with an sd card (or usb port on the older models) so you can just dump up to 90ish samples on it from your computer and select them with the footswitch. I use one at home for screwing around with, but Juan from The Bodysnatchers uses one live all the time and it works great for simple MOAM-style intro/outro samples. —Hot Summer Comes Again! |

Well, a microkorg is not going to trigger samples. We use a microkorg and a sampler live. I might also suggest the program 'backtobasics'. It allows you to map audio wav files to keys on your computer keyboard. It was, up until recently, what Man or Astro-man? used live and we used to use it as well. It is a wonderful and simple program. —THE KBK ... This is the last known signal. We offer Sanctuary. www.thekbk.com |

My wife uses this to excellent effect: http://www.arturia.com/evolution/en/products/moogmodularv/intro.html Not on any surf tunes but ELP stuff and what not. |
