Hey folks,

I don't post here just about ever, but I'd thought a few of you would appreciate the new Reluctant Aquanaut aqua-sition...

Matt Aqua

Hey Matt, nice find. Vintage I presume?

besides sunburst and white what other color options were there for the vintage and 70's Bass VI's

I'd love one with Blue sparkle

"You can't tell where you're going if you don't know where you've been"

Naw, this here is the Fender Custom Shop VI that is supposedly only for '06. The neck on this is dated to the middle of October of this year. There are no color choices, only 3-color Sunburst. I would love it in Olympic White, but I'm not gonna bitch about it.

It is a true 30" in scale length (MIJs are slightly longer), it has a Jazzmaster/Jaguar bridge and mute which DO intonate correctly, and a heftier spring on the trem. It came with the sh!*%y Fender Bass VI roundwounds, so I bought a set of LaBella flatwounds that are designed specifically for the VI. It plays extremely well, has a very unique sound, and could most definitely serve as a bass guitar: Flip the mute up, switch to the neck or middle pickup and pluck away. I'm not in love with the way this thing sounds with two or more pickups activated, but the same goes for my Jazz Basses (neck pickup ONLY). Ya see boys, I'm a single coil man, and I don't think nothin'll change that. I've already zeroed in on the Jet Harris sound, and "The Lonely Surfer" sound, but I can't figure out which of the two is cornier...

I wish I could afford an original, but scarcity has driven prices astronomical, so the oldies aren't "Aquanautical". That being said, this Custom Shop model wasn't cheap, but I've been saving up since I heard about it at the end of last summer. I've got very nice stuff here, in fact, all of the Aquanauts do. Bill, Alex and I are very fortunate young morons who punch each other in the shoulders everyday just to make sure were not dreaming, and then we hit each other some more just for fun. Then we drink beer...

It is nice. I've been so out of it I didn't even know they were reissuing it. That should make some folks at the Fender Forum happy. They were always whining about getting a decent reissue. I'm also glad they chose to base the reissue on the run that had the mute and the 4 switches vs no mute and 3.

Nah - now their crying because it doesn't have the "correct" wide bridge and Mustang style saddles, and because it only comes in sunburst, and because it's kinda pricey.

Those Bass VI's are cool, and very versitile. Are you going to play it at a gig Matt? I'd be interested to know how you feel about it as a P-Bass/Jazz Bass substitute.

Ah....should have seen that coming. Man, when I used to hang out there, they had a petition going to reissue the thing in the US.

Yeah, this will make it to a gig sooner or later. That's totally dependent on WHEN that next gig is exactly...

As far as a substitute for a Precision or Jazz Bass, I'm sure it'll swing it. While not bottom heavy, it does have a solid fundamental on the lower strings, although not nearly as smooth as the Jazz Bass. I'm not a huge fan of the Precision Bass sound (again, I'm a single-coil man), but between the VI and the P there is no direct sonic comparison. The VI, by virtue of the multiple pickups, can sound very much like a Jazz Bass when certain pickups are engaged.

Really, this is like picking up a new instrument for me. There are a few ways you can attack a VI, so I gotta sort this one out...

The bassplayer in my band plays a MIJ VI and I have to say that it sounds marvelous. He often uses it in conjuction with an octave effect to get a heavier and more evil sound.

Anyway, I saw this beuty on ebay. Never seen it in this color before. Absolutely fantastic!

I'm thinking that black VI is refinished. The decal only says "Fender" and the neck pocket doesn't look like a factory job. That said, it's very nice...

I seem to recall that the vintage Fender decals meant to go on black guitars did only say "Fender" on them. They used them on all black guitars, so mentioning the model was out.

Only a few more days to buy the custom shop Bass VI - only about $2500 in Musician's Friend...

Worldlee,
even with all the dings and scratches, that thing is still beautiful.
I bet is sounds even sweeter.
do you have it strung as a Bass or as a Baritone?

The dings and scratches MAKE that thing beautiful...

I first set it up as a Baritone in 'b' and then in 'a' and then just went straight to the bottom for a full 'e' - this just sounded best to me with the roundwounds and is more versatile for recording. I can always capo and still get the tones. I like the dings as well...it shows that it has lived a little. Through the Matchless it becomes a very unique animal.
