Yep - The Mummies, what a great band.

-outsides-

The Mummies are very closely associated to The Phantom Surfers. If I remember right, Mike Lucas was the only different member between the two.

I believe that is right, though there are a few different incarnations of the Phantom Surfers that are accounted for. I think of the "big four" of the Phantom Surfers - Mel Bergman, Mike Lucas, Russell Quan, and Johnny Bartlett. They had a number of other people who'd kind of rotate in and out, especially after Johnny left.

The best band list I've found of the Mummies is:
Russell Quan
Maz Kattuah
Trent Ruane
Larry Winther

Russell obviously was a Phantom Surfer, and is pretty much a "garage god" around San Fran -- but both Maz and Trent played with the Phantom Surfers at one point or another too.

Another interesting tidbit of Mummies lore -- the bar "Thee Parkside" which is a popular club in SF that is one of the main spots to book garage, surf, and rockabilly apparently went in and bought THE Mummie Mobile when they listed it on ebay a few years back. It was towed to the club from the East Bay, and sat outside for a while. It sat outside the club for a month or so, but I never heard what happened to it after that. Talking to one of the bartenders there, apparently they found all sorts of stuff inside the car - old magazines, discarded or broken guitar strings, and oddest of all, a Spice Girls mini stage, complete with Spice Girl action figures. Not to mention yards upon yards of gauze, stained with "blood, urine, and sometimes 'other' bodily fluids".

Gross.

Weird. Cool story, though.

YES! The Mummies paved the way for many folks I know to play trashy garage and surf-inspired instrumentals including everyone in my band, The Ghastly Ones. Their tune "The Fly" is as wild as it comes and a big inspiration.

Wow, my favorite garageband and one of my favorite photographers (Troy Paiva from Lost America) in 1 post on my favorite forum Big Grin

Only thing better would be a Mummies reunion with an extended European tour!

Last time I talked to Maz was at the Tiki Oasis in 2009. He said they are all tired of the Mummies. They are getting older and it's just really difficult for them to jump around in their costumes. Smile

That said, the Mummies will always remain one of my favorites.

Maz played bass in the Mummies and drums/guitar in the Phantom Surfers. Russel Quan is also part of the Surfers from time to time, but the main players are Mel, Johnny, Maz, and Michael.

BTW, FWIW, Johnny Bartlett is the one who gave me my name: Matt tha Kat.

They may have been tired of it, but I do recall them doing some shows in the US, Europe and Brazil in '09, '10 and '11

I had a tape of the Mummies in the mid 90's and didn't know it was at the time. I played all the time where I worked, a picture framing business, in the warehouse. Later I learned how awesome they looked.
