So, I was wondering if some of you could chime in on this subject with your vast array of knowledge. Keep in mind that price is very much a factor in me considering these.
Anyway, considering that both of these sell currently at very reasonable prices, I was wondering if anyone could fill me in on advantages and disadvantages of these two particular models.
Also, I am curious as to what issues people have with the 'Red Knob' Dual Showman heads.

Tom from the Surf Kings uses 2 of the Red knob Dual Showmans,
now they are far from sounding like a old showman head,
but the Surf Kings aren't going for a TRAD sound.
But Tom Usually does a few Crossfires(his 60's band) and Dick Dale songs,
and he turns off the delays, and cranks the real reverb tank, and they sound pretty good for that stuff.
And being that you guys aren't going for a 100% Trad sound either,
I think they would work fine for you.

Noah, I actually have a Red Knob Showman that I got for SUPER cheap from a guy I used to work with, and I like it quite a bit. There are essentially 3 channels, Left Channel, which is essentially your standard Vol, Treb, Mid, Bass Showman channel. There are additions like pull-knob boost for Treble and Mid, but it's essentially just the regular Showman channel. Then there is the other channel which is all hot-rodded out with the V/T/M/B but will presence and gain controls as well as more pull boosts and such. These channels are switchable should you want. There is also the 3rd channel which is a blend of those 2 channels. It's also switchable between 25W and 100W, has an effects loop, impendence switchers, and a speaker dampening switch. In short, you can get a bunch of different sounds out of the amp. I haven't A/Bd them, but I'd venture to guess that even though it's not going to sound like a BF Showman, it's probably not too far off. I would love to do a side by side one day. I think it's a killer amp if you can get one for cheap.

Didn't Tom Stanton (Crossfires, Surf Kings) use one as well?

Hahaha...Indeed...the amp you used at the shows you guys did with us was a Bandmaster, right?

Yes, the '67 Bandmaster is my main amp now. Got it last summer, and I absolutely LOVE it. Gets that hot sound quickly. For the Anniston show, I wish I had brought my Showman, though... I felt a hair underpowered in a room that size. Next time, right?
That Showman is great for bigger venues, though. We're doing an outdoor party here in a couple of weeks, and that will be my weapon of choice.

Damn, Jamie. You were far from underpowered in that room. Trust me.

Well, that's certainly good to hear. I thought I was getting a little lost in the mix and the amp was getting a little too distorted. I guess it really doesn't matter... the fun made up for all concerns!

There might have been a little overdrive on the amp(which you know I am a fan of) but you were certainly not getting lost in the mix. You guys were the only ones that night that actually had a good mix going.
I don't think I will ever get used to the idea that what band members hear when playing is in no way representitive of what the audience hears. I get so down on myself after some shows because I think it all sounded like crap, only to find out through our road guy or a recording that it sounded great out front.

Jeff thought I should get in on the Red Knob Dual Showman conversation, so here I am. I have two of the Red Knob Dual Showman heads.. and love them. The clean channel emulates a BF Dual Showman very well, just plug it into two D130F's, crank the reverb tank and your golden. Which is what I do when I do say Miserlou or really anything where I want that traditional sound. The rest of the time I am blending channel one and two together.. this is way cool. Channel two with a gain knob really kicks up the power by a lot, I use as little gain as I can get away with.. but it really helps by adding that edge for the kind of music I like to do with the Surf Kings. These are great heads.. got both of mine off E Bay for $350 each. The were designed by Rivera for Fender in the 80's. And I like that they have an effects loop which is essential for using my Quadraverb which plays a big role in the Surf Kings sound. For awhile there I used the Quad to split the single into stereo going to each head seperately for a true stereo set up, really nice. And.. oh ya, they are the heaviest head you will ever lift, they have two of the biggest transformers in each head I have ever seen! Great sounding head, versatile... ass kicking volume, I don't think you would be disappointed.
Hope that helps... Tom

I have two of them as well. Great monsters with lots of bells and whistles to play with. However, that also means more things that can go wrong. Mine needed quite a bit of work when I got them but they've held up ever since. Tom isn't kidding about the weight. Apart from the huge transformers they also used particularly thick wooden boards for the head and speaker enclosure wich I think adds a lot to the weight.
