Things went badly south after my completely successful bone marrow transplant. First, my neuropathy was much worse, but I could still play guitar whenever I wanted, and things were looking up for the first seven days post-transplant. The most common side-effect is mucositis, which is the solidification of the mucus membrane in the mouth and digestive system. It prevents chewing and swallowing food and is extremely painful. It always requires hospitalization. It's standard practice to hook up patients to a morphine drip to control pain. I'm describing what followed as a cautionary tale. I never should have let them do it and I don't think anyone who's not young and in perfect health should either. I was confined to bed during the almost two weeks of treatment. I was not allowed to get out of bed at all for any reason. Then, when they told me to get up and out of bed I promptly fell and was put on a "Fall Risk" list. I could no longer walk. I walked into my hospital room, but that was the last time I walked without some sort of mechanical aide. This was followed by a month in a physical rehab facility in which I was also not allowed out of bed except to be escorted to the "necessity" and the rehab gym. Many months of physical and occupational therapy taught me how to compensate for and adapt to my new limitations. But thanks to nearly numb hands and fingers, and the almost total loss of balance, I could not play guitar. A search took me to a Doctor of Chinese medicine whose practice specializes in acupuncture treatments for severe neuropathy. The resulting improvements after only one month shocked both my therapists and I quickly exceeded all my performance goals. I started learning to play guitar again. I have a visiting guitar teacher and am making real progress. I'm starting to relearn the music I always used to play. I can once again sit on and get up from my 24" guitar stool and have set a goal of being ready to play out by late 2024. I know I look gaunt in this photograph. But I weigh exactly what I weighed in 1990, have the same 24" waist, and my BMI is actually upper-middle ideal. I'm also ready to start playing electric guitar again. Two three-month PET Scans again show no evidence of cancer. Would I do it all over again? Unhesitatingly yes, but without morphine. As always, thank you all for your encouragement and support. —This is Noel. Reverb's at maximum an' I'm givin' 'er all she's got. Last edited: Jan 24, 2023 09:21:16 |

Noel, as I already said on facebook - I am really glad to hear you're doing so well, are active again and picking up guitar playing again! The cancer may have been strong, but you were stronger. Go get 'em tiger! You'll live to be (more than) a hundred years! J. —Albums: Changing label. https://magnatech.bandcamp.com |

Hi Noel, thanks for the update and good news. I'm a little confused, was the mucositis a side effect of the morphine? EDIT: I see, it was a treatment for the mucositis and led to the other problems —Danny Snyder Playing keys and guitar with Combo Tezeta Formerly a guitarist in The TomorrowMen and Meshugga Beach Party Latest surf project - Now That's What I Call SURF Last edited: Jan 24, 2023 14:54:02 |
