The Hypnotic IV - a great band and a great group of guys to boot. Seems like since they broke up in '03 or '04, they've dropped out of public consciousness. Their album "Go Baby Go" is still probably one of my desert island all time top tens for surf. ~B~ |

Yeah, "Carmela" and "Que Hombre are two big time favorites of mine. One album I've rediscovered is the Alohas' "Get Leid With..." It's tough and grumbly and just generally awesome. I reeally like the tone on "The Plank." I also really like Johnny Barakat and the Vestells, who make up the overshadowed-by-Johnny Fortune first half of the Rare Surf Vol. 3 comp. They've got some really sweet songs ("Static," "Long Ride," "Happy Time") and their version of "Ghost Riders" is one of my favorites. Even more, their version of "The Wedge" is easily my single favorite outside of DD's original. It's so intense, so edgy, so mean, and so kickass. |

Los Meltones! It's definitely worth seeking out their mid 90's CDs. Mel just cranks out the hits. Buy Speed of Dark @ Bandcamp |

You know, I was going to post the same thing, but I was afraid people were going to think I'm just trying to help Mel sell his brand new Mel-tones CD. Thanks Ferenc, for your unbiased suggestion._ BTW, new Mel-tones CD (hint, hint) 8)_ —Danny Snyder Playing keys and guitar with Combo Tezeta Formerly a guitarist in The TomorrowMen and Meshugga Beach Party Latest surf project - Now That's What I Call SURF |

I've only heard one CD and I'd say they are the most underrated band from their "era". —"as he stepped into the stealthy night air... little did he know the fire escape was not there" https://www.facebook.com/reluctantaquanauts/ |

Some time ago I came across an out of print Sir Finks CD on Amazon and judging by the short soundclips, they were definitely a great surf band. http://www.amazon.com/Instrumentals-Key-Boss-Sir-Finks/dp/B00004TCG9/ — |

I would say two Scando bands have not gotten nearly enough attention for how brilliant they really are: the Beat Tornados (Norway) and Langhorns (Sweden). Probably due to their CDs not being easily available. Ivan —Ivan |

King of Hawaii was a great 90s band. They had there own mesmerizing wet sound. They have 2 CDs worth looking for, the second better than the first. Buy Speed of Dark @ Bandcamp |

I just tried a search for Langhorns on amazon.com and found 3 different albums of theirs easily available. One was even in stock and the other two could be had for cheap from Amazon marketplace sellers. — |

+1 I discovered the Sir Finks after Phil Dirt mentioned them in his review of our (The Surfonics) CD on his site a couple of years ago. I did a google search and ended up at Wildebeest records, where I purchased a little 7" record with The Sir Finks on one side and the Cosmonauti on the other. The first song I heard was "Mazatland Stomp" and I was just knocked out. We play a little different version in our live set and it's always real well received. Everyone should have this record. It was only $3.75 postage paid from Wildebeest Records' site. -Mike |

Well, that's good! I'd highly recommend the first two (Club Gabardino is one of my all-time favorite surf CDs), but I'd advise caution with the third (Mission: Exotica), as their sound changed with that one (started incorporating some electronica elements, not too successfully in my opinion). Hey Ted, Bill, Klas and MikeG -- thanks for the mentions and kind words about the Sir Finks. The Sir Finks were a blast and we were fortunate enough to be able to play with some great bands like Satan's Pilgrims (Que Honda!), The Bomboras, Jackie & the Cedrics and many others....also got to meet a lot of cool and like minded weirdos along the way! -Mike |

Hi Mike! I agree about the Sir Finks, The Beat Tornados (!!!), and The Langhorns. Chopper and I rave about The Volcanos, but I think they deserve more recognition. Hopefully they will get a 3rd full length out the door sometime (oh-pretty-please-hint-hint-hint). —Site dude - S3 Agent #202 "It starts... when it begins" -- Ralf Kilauea |
