Permalink Tabs for Malaguena?

New Topic
Goto Page: 1 2 Next

I've long wanted to add Malaguena to my repertoire, but can't find any tab beyond the simple folk riff. I find trying to learn the music from a recording too frustrating - my ear just ain't that great. So, if anyone knowns where I can find a tab of a surf music version of Malaguena, please let me know...I like the version done by The Trashmen, but just about any version would do.

PM me and I'll fill you in.

Generally not the Trashmen per se.

Here's my favorite Malaguena, again.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mfVf7N8CJEA

In quite a lot of it, sadly, not all, the camera shows the fingering and picking clearly. Not that that can help me get remotely close to what happens here. I'm utterly defeated by this.

See below for a link to the tab book of the original composition of Malaguena.

Sorry. This book for $3.95 has guitar tabs of the original composition of Malaguena. It's just what you asked for.

Noel: the Ernesto Lecuona version of Malaguena (that Charo is playing) bears little resemblance to the one WindanseaBeachBoy wants. All the versions you hear surf bands play are simply derivative of The Trashmen's fantastic but highly simplified arrangement (well, damn near composition) of the tune.

I like to play one similar to everyone else but with some added notes from the Am scale, 1st position, in the first melody for a slightly more Spanish/Flamenco color.

Good point. Isn't it possible to just skip the unwanted stuff and use the tabs of the main themes strung together with the flamenco chords you'll get in the tablature? The surf versions I've heard could be reconstructed from the tab book, sort of cut and paste, don't you think? It would be a start anyway.

Well, sure. I don't usually write tab but I can give you some clues to get you started. The 1st part is essentially an Emaj/Fmaj affair. You chord those and then for the melody use notes from the Amin scale, 1st position.

EDIT: Matt22, who posted up there, can help you. He played a nice rendition of it a few years ago on my current band's first CD. It is really note-for-note after the Trashmen arrangement, which is the standard, like I said.

The Satan's Pilgrims version is the version I play - and my favorite. The timing might be a bit more straight forward or at least easier to learn than the other. At least to my ear, the other versions don't pack the same punch.

Is anyone aware of a backing track?

I often use a Boss RC2 looper w/ built in surf beat. Works great for recording on the fly backing tracks.

I made a backing track a while ago, it's full of fun.
Based on Bambi's version, more or less.
I will try to post it soon, just need to tweak it a bit to be presentable...
Is there any copyright problem involved?

OK, I had my wife film me playing it. I mess it up in the middle, but that's only because I had to play it slowly...lol. I remembered it and carried on. It's pretty simple and stays in a major key, but you can do whatever with it. I just faithfully followed the Trashmen's version. Charro kicks ASS over me. Who would have known she was THAT good at guitar????

Here's me playing it live last summer with my current band, the Coconauts:
