Hey - You've got two different bands there. The Big Dipper is by a different group, aka The Renegades (not the UK band..!)

There are two surf bands called the Charades.

The original - from Australia originally called the Renegades.
http://www.discogs.com/artist/Charades,+The+(3)
The other - from Finland

(I'm working on building the discography at the moment)

Surf Rock was big in Sydney, Australia in the early 60's. The band changed style somewhat after returning from a tour of Japan, and the local scene had moved away from surf.

Thanks, Rysty! I appreciate the correction (and any further information)!

By the way, here's a third Charades instrumental band:

Sophia

As far as I know there are just two other instrumentals by them, Christina and several covers of the Rhythm Kings' Delano Soul Beat. They were the backing band of the Charades vocal combo (a/k/a the Latin Knights), from Bakersfield, CA. (Sophia & Christina have both been covered recently by a Denver, CO, band calling itself first the Reacharounds and now Mustang Lightning.)

Hi Guys,

Really enjoyed hearing the "Big Dipper" from the youtube clip "http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KWfHbT51Yts Big Dipper" that you posted up.

It is of particular interest to me as my Dad, Paul Baker, was in the Charades at that time, he's on the right hand side of the picture with the Gibson SG, he was about 18 years old at the time.

There's another clip of the band, titled "The Renegades - Kahuna", although I'm pretty sure when Dad joined that had changed to being called the Charades already, although the song was written while they were The Renegades I think, not 100% though.

There's also a couple of pictures of the band recording the song Big Dipper on the web site http://members.ozemail.com.au/~tabbler/PicBk/ErlyPicM.html

Top row: Paul Saveclieff, Johnny Devlin, Des Thomson, Peter Van de Voorde
Bottom row: Paul Baker (18 years old), Murray Chenery, Trevor Miller

Thanks for the additional information on the Renegades/Charades, Dazz!

No worries Tuck.

It's not really a Surf music video, but there is another clip of the Charades backing Johnny Devlin, performing Memphis Tennessee, that is equally enjoyable none the less.

The good stuff keeps rolling it! The ill-kept secret is, I'm pretty happy with most instrumental-related stuff. Big Grin Surf is good of course!
