I checked out the video, yeah it's hard to discount what Hearteater is thinking. There's very little sustain that's for sure, but there's enough that to me it doesn't sound like the mute is on. I own a jag myself and have some experience with the mute. I'd guess he's controlling the sustain with his left hand. Or maybe he figured out a way to get an 'in between' setting on his mute.

whowa, this is a nice quiz-question. Im torn, really, but Im leaning against no mute engaged. it's possible to get that little sustain without the mute, it sounds like very high-set pickups, only bridge pup engaged by the looks of it. also it looks in the shot in the beginning that he has it disengaged, but it is hard to tell, and Im stil not sure.

say, does anyone know whether they are actually playing live in that clip?

I seriously doubt Carl played the intro to Fun Fun Fun with his mute on. Because if the mute is set properly it's going to have even less sustain.

That sound on the beginning of the Wendy clip on Youtube doesn't sound like a mute to me either, it also looks like it is disengaged. It sounds more like dead flatwound strings on a sustainless Jaguar. Nickel flatwounds on a Fender Jaguar IMO are the sound you are hearing.

well thanks for the tip, but i still would like to figure out a mute for a strat and my wildkat because it would get less sustain, these guitars arent exactly known for having little sustain, and plus i like the sound of a mute.

do flatwounds get less sustain? ive never tried using them before.

Why not just sell one of your guitars, buy yourself a nice Jap Jag, and then go nuts with the mute? If you really like Carl Wilson's tone, the chances are you will love your Jaguar. And then you can spend less time messing about and more time playing...

Unfortunately I don't think the Japanese Jags have a mute. I believe some people have installed one on a MIJ or CIJ from my memories of the Fender Forum (FDP). Unless you are good with tools or want to pay someone to do it, you need to get a vintage guitar or an AVRI.

Again, Mel Waldorf would be a good resource to tap for this. He has installed mutes on Jazzmasters, MIJ Bass VI's, and maybe even a MIJ/CIJ Jag...I'm fuzzy on this though.

because i have 4 guitars, 2 local music shop brands, one of them is acoustic, the other is a es-335 copy, an epiphone wildkat, and an old peavey raptor that i got for $75 in the classified 5 years ago as my first guitar. i the the latter for most of our stuff now, and it was my first guitar and i wouldnt wanna sell it for that reason and id probably get $25 from it.

i guess im outta luck as far as getting a jap jag, because i dont think they are shipping any more of those to the u.s. after the end of the year.

i would love one, but cant quite afford one yet. thats definetely the next guitar i get, but i wont have the money for probably 6 months. but im also looking for a solution to this because even after i get the jag, ill still want to use my wildkat when i play shows, and i want them to have the same functions.

Oops. you're of course right, Brian. A brain-fart on my part, I knew that but it didn't connect. Anyway, US-made Jag reissues are not that expensive second-hand on eBay anymore....

yeah, it sounds different than the recording. im not even quite sure that denny even played drums in the studio for that song. the intro with the guitar in the very first part and the drums that follow are a bit different too. oh, and the solo is an organ on the record.

you know, ive actually only seen like 1 or 2 videos where they werent actually playing live. they were just an extremely tight band, which is impressive because carl was only 16-18 in '62-'64 (their best years), denny basicly learned to play drums during the recording of their first record, and brian was deaf in one ear.

Mel has the instructions for installng a mute on his site. it's rather complicated though.

but indead, save for a jag, practice a bit on your damping technique, and in the meantime, cut to specs a piece of rubber of an old tire, and make it so that it slides under your strings and touches 'em just enough to hold it in place. maybe glue some felt or sponge to it. see how it sounds, it's virtually free, and that kind of gizmo-ery will be apreciated by the audience.

Hearteater, I believe the material to use is high quality window weather stripping. About a $.01 worth.

Flatwounds are known for that thuddy more flatish sound. They certainly are not as bright sounding as roundwounds. I've had one set of flats one one of my Jaguars for over a year now, you can hear the bass E string on the beginning of "Justine" on our Myspace.

is the Wildkat a hollowbody? I wonder if you could rig up a Country Gentlemen style flip up or dial up Gretsch mute. You'd have to drill holes. But as WR says you can do it with your palm.

its actually a semihollow, but its weird. its only solid underneath the bigsby area. most semihollows are solid all the way underneath the tail end and the pickups, but no, not this one. so a country gentlemen setup is out of the question. but thanks.

maybe ill try flatwounds, maybe itll get rid of a bit of that icepicky sound i have. and your guitar sounds really good, so it wouldnt hurt to try.

Flatwound strings + thicker strings have less sustain. I don't have much experience with pure nickle strings, but they might be another factor.

You can easily stuff a wad of paper towel near the bridge under the strings for fairly quick muting. I've also heard the use of a cut-up mouse pad. Watch Mcgyver for inspiration.

I've never actually tried a jag mute, but I'd have to say my interest in it was for the same reasons. I have since found ways to get around it though. I use close to the neck picking often and muting would help for a more double bass sound. I found that with the pickup selector on the neck with palm muting or picking near the neck comes close to that sound. I can live with that. For the chord strumming, what works for me is with practice you can play chords with just the right pressure so as to mute the strings and lose their sustain. Very percussive. For open chords you have to fully mute any open strings, but this adds to the percussive sound and in many instances is actually perferable. I learned this after getting real heavily into Bo Diddley.

Good luck, matey!
