Permalink The Astronauts, actually in Baja!

Well, not really. I like to schlepp my guitar along on our Baja camping trips and play surf music for the lads when the waves aren't cooperating. This vid is from our latest excursion exploring the most remote part of the peninsula. Can't tell you where it was! Wink

That's fantastic. It's like an offering to the gods of the sea.

All thumbs up on this one for sure! Matt is just too smooth.

Traditional........speak softly and play through a big blonde amp. Did I mention that I still like big blonde amps?

Best version of that song I've heard, I never liked it til now. Great Job!

Thought I'd bump the original topic but also ask a few questions. This clip ends with Matt saying, "The surf ..." Then it ends. So I hope Matt doesn't mind me asking.

Matt, what did you say next? I can't be the only person who wonders. And are there more of these musical clips? Last, would you ever consider sharing more of this one or the others you hinted at with a broader audience, like here maybe? Thanks.

Matt always says "The Surf is always up, in your own mind"

Funny how this old clip keeps getting resurrected! My buddy Duane shot this a couple of years ago on his little point-and-shoot digi camera (he had just found out that it would shoot video!). It was just one of those happy accidents where everything fell into place---just sitting around the camp on a slow afternoon eating fresh ceviche and swilling Tecates while I was playing guitar and Duane was futzing with his camera. I bring along one of those little Vox battery powered amps and plug a little mini-disc player with my Wave Machine tracks into the mike input, and, tada!, instant surf music for a lazy winter afternoon. Chalk it up to serendipity that the mike in the camera picked up the audio just right along with the actual surf sounds, and that I didn't make too many clams. Cool At the end of the clip, I simply say the name of the song, "the Surfer's Stomp" (ironic title, as I don't think you can dance the surfer stomp to the Surfer's Stomp). For better or worse, this is the only such clip there is. Thanks for asking!

Thanks for answering, Matt. It always gives me joy to see it again, so it's probably I who am always using it for an example of something or other. It's a perfect example of what I like about the other kind of surf music, the quiet surf that best suits the peaceful moments. I'm very glad everything worked out.

This really does capture a moment in time, Matt, it's just perfect. Great song choice, great playing, great sound, and the perfect setting.

Vox DA-5? I love that amp. Everyone I play it for is amazed by how good it sounds. Heck, I'm amazed by how good it sounds. In a recent Guitar Player interview the highly acclaimed guitarist Ibrahim Ag Alhabib of the Tuareg/Mali band Tinariwen (who usually record in the middle of the Sahara desert!) when asked about amps he uses said "The Vox DA5 is a good desert amp — it runs on batteries." Pretty cool!
