Short of tearing a hole in my speaker, what are the ket ingredients in getting the Link Wray sound?
I'm thinking Gretsch-->Fender Reverb Unit-->Silvertone 1484.

Actually, the 1484's onboard 'verb will probably get you closer to Link's sound. A Boss OD-1 or TS-9 Tubescreamer will grunge the sound up.

Early Link a good built in or tremolo pedal..later Link..crank it with a distortion pedal in front and some echo

How could I forget a Trem pedal????? Duh!

For Classic Link: Supro or Danelectro guitar plugged into a Supro amp turned all the way or durned near all the way up. In fact, just about any guitar hooked into a Supro will yield sounds quite close to the Linkster. Supes have a major midrange hump in their sound that gives 'em that unique growl. You can fake this on other amps by using an EQ and some sort of transparent overdrive, although some (like 60's Gibsons and some early Peaveys) have enough midrange in their knobs to get you close without the EQ thrown in.

It's always interesting how we try and capture the tone of artists from the past that played (for the most part) through very simple setups.
Duane Eddy's sound is a good example..simple melodies and gear but his bends,slides and hammer ons (not to mention whammy dips is what rocks it
I'm just as bad..now how did The Astronauts do that..hmmm,,maybe I can get a multi track pedal set for 4 guitars...some better mics...and.....
It is fun!

I dunno if using an empty 200-gallon water tank for your reverb is simple, but it DOES sound good!

ive been playing around with the idea of of making a cheap 12" extension cab with a slashed speaker to play around with

If you have a fender blackface or blonde head, use a pedal that will split into 2 cables. Plug into an overdrive/fuzz/distortion on normal channel. Plug the other straight into the vibrato/bright channel. Distinct ringing notes/chords from the clean, fuzzy/full sounds from the OD. Doesn't work for everything, but with careful mixing, I can nail that early Link/rumble sound.

If you don't have a fender or have one with reverb, I don't have any good suggestions because the channels are phase cancelling. Sorry.
