The Looney Tunes do a song called Wayward Nile, is it the same?
Probably, it's an old standard.
One of the best mellow surf style songs i've heard is called "Taboo" It is also done by the Looney Tunes.
This song was also covered by the Fifty Foot Combo (from Belgium) and the Treble Spankers (from Holland) - and I bet all three bands got it from the AMAZING version from '63-'64 by a Belgian band the Jokers - see them performed it on YouTube (with the audio from the studio version): http://youtube.com/watch?v=cHpBOhwXMak
And dig those crazy pickslides in the middle!
Double Crown mail order has the Jokers's Best of, Vol. 1 for sale (there are four volumes, but two of them are sadly out of print) - vol. 1 has Tabou plus the Song Of Delilah, plus a whole bunch of other absolute gems like the Sabre Dance, Carioca, Caravan (and a few dogs, like When the Saints Go Marching In, but not many overall). I've REALLY gotten into the Jokers over the last month or two, especially the last couple of days, actually. They have a very surfy sound for sixties euro-instro, and they exclusively used Jazzmasters plus Fender piggybacks. And they had an absolutely expertly way with exotic ballads in particular, though they could definitely rock it out on occasion. They also seem to have been a pretty big influence on all sorts of modern European surf bands (Los Twang! Marvels most recently), who keep covering their stuff. The Jokers didn't do any originals as far as I know, but all of their covers sounded completely like THEM.

The mention of Taboo reminds me of an old song called Temptation, performed (apparently) by Bing Crosby, Frankie Laine, Perry Como, the Everly Brothers, and others. It has a similar sound and feel to Mar Gaya or Maurice Ravel's Bolero.
the first verse goes:
You came, I was alone
I should have known
You were temptation
You smiled, luring me on
My heart was gone
And you were temptation
Very moody and dark, with some Eastern Mediterranean influence, I guess. Sounds like something Eartha Kitt or Peggy Lee would sing.
I think it would surf up quite well, with or without lyrics. Listen to a preview sample of Bing's version, #4 on http://www.mp3album.biz/bing-crosby-albums/legacy-86086-album/
— I'm not a complete idiot. Some parts are missing.

I think I may have heard somebody do a instro version of Temptation,
but it may have been an Exotica version, not surf.
but yeah it would be great if done properly, with all the trimmings etc.

Yes, the Shadows Temptation is great. I even got to hear The Troubadours play that live!

Indeed. That's a fantastic piece of music and with a bit of reverb it would work well.
Beyond that, almost any minor key melody in an appropriate time signature would have potential. Earlier today I was playing my Jaguar Baritone through an echo unit, just fooling around with sounds and I played a number of jazz tunes all of which sounded great surfed up. Walk Don't Run was a Jazz tune with lots of cointerpoint and it did pretty good as a Surf tune.

"evening comes" by the shadows -- covered nicely by the alohas on "an evening in nivram." also, if it's merely to listen to for inspiration, may i suggest a non-surf slow instro, just so you look at it from another angle? perhaps "lenny" by stevie ray vaughan. perhaps not. good question, though!

there's a great band that I have played from time to time on TWANG SHEBANG
they are called THE VANDURAS
man I am nutzoid for their stuff
check 'em out
www.myspace.com/thevanduras
gotta love it
UNSTEADY FREDDIE
The Vanduras are amazing. I love every single song on that album! I asked Geoff if they have any plans for a new record and apparently they are currently recording a new one!
By the way this topic was so helpful to me because I've been looking for slower tempo tunes and everything everyone mentioned hits the spot!!
I was blown away by The Mermen - Dancing in her sleep. So cool to hear some surf bands doing stuff like this...inspiring.
Ah! I just remembered of one track I love and don't think anyone has mentioned it yet : The Tritones - Chagrin De La Mer
http://www.myspace.com/thefisharenotwhattheyseem
I love that tune.
Also, Mermaid Beach by Martin Cilia.
Cool!

Sorry if already mentioned, but 'Surfside' by The Denvermen and also 'The Tide' and 'Rainbow Bay' by The Dave Bridge Trio - both influential 60's Aussie surf musicians/groups. You might struggle to find the Dave Bridge one, but google/youtube for 'Surfside', there's clips and info around. Another one is 'Spring Is Near' by The Outlaws.

I dug around in the KFJC library and found two slow surf songs that I played on my show last night that I loved - come to find out that Ben wrote about BOTH of them several years ago!
I loved Django Twango's Sunset and now realize The Bitch Boys' Snowman is from the wonderful animated film that I used to watch with my kids when they were little.

wooza wrote:
Both the Bambi Molesters and the Mermen (really) have
cranked out lots of the most mellow songs, so they
would be any easy starting point.
Here are a few from the "chill surf" playlist on my
computer, which I think are toward the slowest end of
the spectrum:
Bambi Molesters - Pearl Divin', The Breeze and I,
Glider, Corazon de Loco Jorge
Mermen - Merry-Go-Round, Raglan, Sway, Sand, Slo Mo
HVO, Abalone Daze
Django Twango - Sunset
Slacktone - Nocturne
Madeira - Crescent Moon, The Oasis
Space Cossacks - Jewel of Duende
Bitch Boys - Snowman
Most of the rest are from KFJC comps which, if you have
any, usually tend to have at least one good slow song.
Good luck, Danny. Can't wait to hear your take. Man,
when slow surf is done well, it can be the best.

I'll second "Adventures in Paradise" - The Atlantics
Cool as recorded, but I hear a lot of leeway to kind of put your band's stamp on it as well.
We're not currently performing it, but it's on my radar.

The New Bambi Molesters DVD/cd has a lot of their slower and mid tempo songs on there.
Very Moody and or romantic stuff.
