Anything by Slacktone, Los Twang Marvels! or the Madeira will be challenging.
Turquoise by Laika & the Cosmonauts is a zinger.

At the Instro Summit in Chapel Hill, NC, I heard the Aqualads, some of their stuff was pretty ripping. Give a listen to their newest
Aqualads - Treasure)
The first few songs have some nice guitar work on them. I haven't heard their first 2 cds yet, the 3rd was a little tame. But I am getting the newest one today via CD baby.

And of course even the simplest stuff can always be made harder. Change keys, learn melodies in different octaves, work on different speeds, etc. If you're looking for things with more involved melodies, there are countless tunes from other genres which would make great surf tunes--as soon as someone takes the time to arrange them!
good luck!

You need to check out Laika and the Cosmonauts, even their first "surfy" album is filled with difficult parts.

I agree with the other posts. For what it's worth, a few of my favorite shredders:
Slacktone - Tidal Wave (you might get blisters just listening to it)
Nebulas - Rhino Chaser
Space Cossacks - Apes of Wrath (anything Ivan plays is great)
Atomic Mosquitos - Sabre Dance
Surf Coasters - Intruder (-- and tons more)
Try them back to back! It's fun for the whole family.

Don't forget Los Straitjackets TAILSPIN! That song will whip your fingers in to shape. I'm trying to learn that now and it's a learning experience.

If you count it as surf - "Hawaii 5-0". Changes keys twice and those little riffs at the end of each verse are different. Maybe not so hard to play but really tough to memorize.

The main riff from Laika & the Cosmonauts "A Night in Tunisia" is a good one to stop a guitar player dead in his tracks. So is the opening to the Ventures' "Runnin' Wild". The Ventures "A Go-Go Dancer" is tough all over!
Not a surf song, but one that continues to challenge my band are Vinnie Bell's licks on "Bellzouki", which often sound easy, but ain't.

Those machine gun single-strokes are a bitch to play smoothly over and over.

I'll see your Los Twang version (Excellent in all respects by the way; I'm very far below this level of guitarmanship and it's a very surfy version.) and raise you one Jose Feliciano. This is just scary.

Well, Cartablanca, thank you very, very much, I'm honored (and a bit in disbelief and slightly embarrassed - but mostly honored ). I'm really glad to hear that you enjoy our music so much, it's a great feeling to hear people say that. We hope to have the new Madeira CD out later this year - stay tuned!

Indeed! A great band! In fact, all the musicians you've listed are quite remarkable, with Alex, Shigeo, and Dave being the cream of the surf crop, in my opinion. But check out also Ferenc Dobronyi of Pollo Del Mar (and Ferenc's other part-time band, Frankie & the Pool Boys) for some finger twisting material. And from the '60s, the Atlantics from Australia - some unbelievable chops on exhibit there. And guitar playing on the upcoming TomorrowMen album should be right up your alley, too, Danny Snyder stakes his claim as being among the most accomplished modern surf guitarists with this album. A guy that doesn't get as much recognition for being an astounding techinican, mostly because he makes it sounds so easy is Frankie Blandino of the Fathoms, check out some of their stuff. Finally, I'll agree that Mikko of Laika & the Cosmonauts is also a much more technical guitarist than most people think, and has a lot of both gorgeous and difficult playing.
Good luck with it all, and keep being challenged and playing! And thanks once again for the nice compliments, I greatly appreciate them.
(PS For some incredible guitar playing that's on the edge of the surf genre - and often times over it - check out Jim Thomas' guitar playing in the Mermen. That guy can PLAY!!)

Oh, how could I forget - for some blazing super-trad style surf guitar, check out Evan Foster's playing on the first few Boss Martians albums. Evan took the ripping style played by guys like Ritchie Podolar (AKA Richie Allen), and just did it to perfection. So much great surf music out there to discovver!

This isn't surf music at all. However I have always thought if someone could play '!2th Street Rag' by Roy Clark they would be a stud.
