Permalink who do you consider great songwriters?

I wanted to answer by considering what makes a "great" songwriter, but that question turned out to be too subjective to answer.

All of my favorite songwriters, surf and non-surf, have already been mentioned in this thread so I can't add too much. Danny got Elvis Costello, one of my faves. The only other one I would list is John Hiatt. His "Bring the Family" album is a masterpiece, but his stuff consistently hits me right in the heart.

Don

I forgot many, but Brian's post reminded me of one big one.
Jon & the Nightriders, good call Brian.

and another non surf one,
Danny Elfman for his movie scores, and his work with Oingo Boingo.
just an evil genius all aroud.

Ennio Morricone (and I'm not necessarily thinking about his spaghetti western soundtracks).

Modern Surf: Madiera, Slacktone, Satans Pilgrims

Non Surf: George Harrison, Lennon & McCartney, Brian Wilson, Lee Hazelwood.

John Fogerty is probably my favorite songwriter, he truly "wrote a song for everyone".

These guys for sure must be mentioned
Lou Reed
Dylan
DC Berman - Silver Jews
Bob Pollard - Guided by Voices
SM - Pavement
Wayne Coyne- Flamming Lips
Neil Young
Wilco
The Drive By Truckers "The Dirty South" is one of the best storytelling albums in a while.

this guy has written some really kick-ass surf tunes, as of late:

Yes, Al Casey too. Lee Hazlewood also wrote some of the tunes on the 1965 From Sea To Ski album by studio group The Glaciers. The tunes are great re-recordings of the Astronauts/Casey ones but under different titles.

For surf and instrumental music, I like Paul Johnson, Eddie Bertrand, and Eddie Angel. Non-surf would include Joey Ramone, Rob Zombie, and Glenn Danzig.

By the way, good call on John Fogerty, Mike. He has written some great songs.

How about Van Morrison? He wrote some amazingly poetic stuff, beyond Brown Eyed Girl.
