Yeah, I forgot to mention the ridiculous delay between sets. It was a little over an hour after the stage was ready to go for Dick's grand entrance.
BTW, the Los Straitjackets/Dave Alvin show on Saturday was even better...actually LOTS better, IMO. With no idiotic, unexplained delays between the bands as on Friday.
I hadn't seen LSJ since Jimmy Lester left and was impressed with Jason's drumming. He has a different style than Jimmy but he was quite effective.
And "Gregorio el Grande", whoever the hell he is in real life, did an AWESOME job subbing for Danny Amis. Most impressive.
But the highlight of Saturday evening for me was Dave Alvin's drummer. Major, major skills, she was amazing. Almost a match for Jimmy L. and a whole lot easier on the eyes!

shout-out to LARAMIE DEAN for all his help, communication, etc. during my brief 2-night stay in Florida for DICK DALE's shows (and Laramie's too!!)
I saw the shows in ST. PETERSBURG and MIAMI, and I gotta tell ya, I thought they were killer!!
considering what DICK'S been through these last few years (fighting cancer!!), I was simply in awe of watching Him give, and give, and give ... the guy just loves to be on stage, kicking ass! And as exhausted as he was when the shows were over, he rushed right over to the 'Merch Table' to sign whatever was put before him, took pix w/ fans. And he made sure, as usual, that everyone got a chance to meet with him. Class act IMHO. His Wife (bloody gorgeous!!) was running the 'Merch Table'. Great to finally meet her. Lovely, kind woman.
LARAMIE and his band thrashed and twanged and shredded and pumped it up, both nights. Laramie is a great guy, and I know he was in 'Surf Heaven' being up on stage on the same bill as DICK DALE. The guy rocks out hard!
JIMMY DALE on Drums for both his Dad and for Laramie was an added bonus!
A series of pix will be posted soon (FLICKR), and videos (The Magic Camera is back!!) on my YouTube page.
Twanggggggggggggg!

West Palm Beach show was great. Laramie and his band sounded excellent. Laramie did some creative and cool unconventional arrangements on a couple of songs. Jimmy Dale's drumming was outstanding - powerful and precise. Dick Dale's performance was as you would expect, world class with entertaining showmanship. He worked the crowd into a frenzy. Looking forward to catching them again thursday in Winter Park.

Impressions of my first Dick Dale concert - I am sure this is the smallest venue on their tour. This restaurant/club is a converted 7-11 store on the beach in St. Augustine. When I walked up, I noticed a note of caution written on the menu blackboard in bright pink chalk. It read, “Warning, this concert will be loud. Free earplugs available.”
Laramie and crew provided solid surf to open. I thought the Japanese trumpet player was an interesting touch. What more can be said about Laramie, a truly nice guy who is having a blast on this tour.
Dick Dale’s stage consisted of four large cabinets, two on each side of the drums, containing a total of six 15” speakers mic’d to the house. I don’t know how many Dick was playing through, or how many Capt Ron was playing through, but it was loud. Dick Dale was exactly how I envisioned him, a big crusty old curmudgeon who immediately commands the stage. And, I say that as a good thing. He commanded. The strings on his gold sparkle Strat looked like telephone cables. I didn’t realize he has no tremolo bar. He sang several tunes including Fever, Ring of Fire and House of the Rising Sun. His loud instru of Amazing Grace was just that, amazing. Capt Ron and Jimmy, an excellent drummer, had fun trying to determine which direction DD would go next. It was great to see DD out among his fans. Hopefully, he’ll have many more years of touring.
Fun night. Go see ‘em.

Thanks everyone for the encouragement! Really means alot! The shows have been outstanding! Largest had over 700 paid, and the smallest was indeed Cafe 11 in St. Augustine. I think 125 was paid max. We have sold out most of the shows. Really rad. Having a blast with everyone, 10 people on this tour. Dick loves how everyone gets along, and how clean cut we are! Hes been getting healthier every show! Today he busted out some Kung Fu on me like the old days! He is super fast! No way to stop him!
Thanks again for the kind words, I am always checking in, and I tell everyone at the merch tabel to visit SG101 for tons of surf info!

The surf fans in Canada want to see Dick again. The acoustic set was great last time he played Vancouver, but we'd like more!

Winter Park show outstanding. Laramie's unconventional version of "Penetration" is a breath of fresh air... or nitrous oxide. Either way, very refreshing. Solid bass player, excellent horn playing, Jimmy Dale powering it out on the drums.
Dick Dale delivers and playing at the peak of his abilities. Ron on bass, establishing a telepathic link with Dick it seems.
See this tour if you can!
