Permalink Need help in regard to process of releasing a CD

So, Kill,Baby...Kill! are releasing our first EP this spring. We surely want to do this the right way and not just have it available at our shows. However, I am relatively clueless to the process. If there is someone who can help layout the process to me, I would be more than greatful. We want to have our music available on Itunes and Amazon and I know this requires a unique UPC code, as well as ISRC codes for the songs. I would love anyone with knowledge of this process to chime in with details, as well as pricing and such.

I'd send copies to Double Crown and Deep Eddy and see if they would carry it in their catalogs. Definitely pay a visit to www.CDbaby.com. They can handle downloads and physical dist. I'm really pleased with my results there.

I use www.cdpostershop.com for my actual CD printing. They do a good job at a great price. You can get a upc code from them free.

BTW, I got a lot of good info from the guys here in this previous thread:

Someone told me CD Baby retains some rights to your music....that may be bad info. We use Tunecore for digital release, where I know they pass thru all royalties. You pay about $50 to release an album to all the digital stores, and $10 for a single. Their website has much info. Reverbnation also will release digitally for you. We are very pleased with Tunecore.

For hardcopy, we used Tunecore's CD duplication service. 50 CDs in full color with color label and 4-panel insert were about $235. I have an exceptional graphic artist who created the CD front and back, and 4-panel insert specific to the Tunecore specs for $450.

Have any of you used the Reverbnation service to get distribution through Itunes and such?

I've used Reverbnation, but I've had better results from CDBaby. I think more people go there to find new music. I've had little success through Reverbnation as far as distribution goes, but I do enjoy other aspects of their service not related to distro.

BTW, last time I checked, you can get 50 CD's for under a $120 shipped from cdpostershop.com - that's with a 2-Panel insert, full color & full color disc printing. I don't think it's much more for 4-panel.

Ravcon,

Thank you for the 'heads-up' to cdpostershop. I am absolutely amazed at their pricing. I am going to look into getting a sample disk from them in order to verify quality. I will let everyone know.

As far as reverbnation goes, I am only interested because they claim to offer a service which I believe is 30 dollars where they will get your music submitted to Itunes and Amazon.

I can vouch for the quality. I've done 4 orders with them so far, and they've done a fine job. Just make sure and check and recheck your files.

BTW, CD Baby offers the same digital distrubution options, plus physical CD sales for for one fee. Reverbnation doesn't do physical distribution at this time, unless you set up a store, which looked to be a bit of a pain.

Keep in mind that if you want to submit your release to Pandora, you have to have your CD available in physical format at Amazon, not just available for download.

Mike

Yes, we plan on physical and digital. I noticed on the cdpostershop site, they have a package that includes 100 cds, shrinkwrapped with upc, promotional posters and a coupon for free CD Baby setup for only 230 dollars. That is one hell of a deal.

Yep, that's a sweet package with the posters to boot!

make sure its a real cd(silver) on the bottom,
not a cdr ( blue, green or rainbow colored on the bottom)
cdrs are not as durable and degrade in sound volume over time,
if exposed to hot cd players.

We are carrying the Man From Ravcon CD, and the quality of the CD's are very good. However, although the discs are sliver in color, they are still very well made CD-R's. You can see on the disc the "burn line" showing how much of the disc is filled with music. The print quality of the cover and tray card is good as well, although not the same quality you'd see from major label CD's. If you're looking to do a short run of CD's, then www.cdpostershop.com is probably the way to go. At Double Crown we use www.cdexperts.com. They are better suited for 1000+ CD runs (which is what we do), but will do quantities as low as 300. Best part is, they manufacture their CD's through Sony, so the quality of our CD's is the same as the major labels.

Our policy at Double Crown is to carry only silver/major label quality CD's in our mail order catalog. We have made a few exceptions, one being the Man From Ravcon CD. However, the quality is good enough that it nearly passes for major label quality, the main things that show it isn't is the "burn line" on the CD's ad the UPC code, which looks a little different than major label type CD's.

Double-Crown, thank you, and everyone else, for the advice. CDPostershop is going to be our best option at the moment. In our price range, they seem to offer the most bang for your buck. As far as print quality goes, it seems they have different levels of quality and it is not very expensive to move up a level. The inevitable goal is to do a short run or two and then, hopefully, find an indi label that will pick this up. Hopefull thinking, of course...

We actually have a moderately important individual handling production duties on this EP. Hopefully his name alone will be enough to allow people to overlook that this is not a replicated cd and, rather a duplicated one.

Well, it is official. Cdpostershop no longer provides duplication services. This stinks because they really did have the best price and, apparently, quality out there. It seems some other options are going directly through CDbaby, which costs about 100 bucks more(hate to do that because this is an ep and we are trying to keep the price down) or Oasis. Do any of you have experience with either of these?

We used them recently to make 100 promo CD's. Both the dupe quality and the printing quality were very good. Tell 'em Frank from Cutback sent you.

Damn. That really sucks.

I had The Red Planets disc done through DiscMakers and had a positive experience overall. But, their duplication prices are affordable (can't speak to quality, since mine are replications, not duplications aka CDRs). But, they can do low numbers for decent prices.

If you so choose, they can also onramp the discs to CDBaby, who in turn can onramp them to iTunes, eMusic, Amazon, etc. But, it's just as easy to go direct to CDBaby.

Full length "Chases Lead to Crashes" available now - The Red Planets

Yeah, Gary. I actually got onto CDbaby and looked at their duplication pricing and was quickly shocked to realize that all it does is piggyback Diskmakers...This is still a bit more than our initial budget but is still reasonable. I believe this is the route we are going.

Regards,
