Permalink Surfy Fred Meyer Commercial

New Topic

Fred Meyer has a very surfy version of "We Wish You A Merry Christmas" in a new commercial. The reverb is onboard reverb as opposed to tank reverb. But the song sounds awesome.

Neat-O!! We don't have Fred Meyer here. You tube????

Probably not You Tube. I couldn't find it.

No Fred Meyer! I'm sure you'll live.

This was mentioned in another thread. It's a Portland supergroup featuring Dave Pilgrim on lead, Jeff Martin (Surf Trio) on bass, and Steve Verbtone on drums. I can't imagine Dave not using a tank, unless he used his twin. Steve?
PS both Jeff and Steve work in advertising for Freddie's and Steve was going to post an mp3.
Steve?

Woah awesome. Steve of the Verbtones is awesome.

Is there organ on it? Jeff had to call me in Memphis to get in touch with Dave in Portland (ha). He mentioned that they wanted Dave to play that too, but I don't know how it ended up.

Steve Verbtone sent me the mp3 a few weeks ago and it rocks no Farfisa or keys but the vibe is excellent it sounds very SP/Verbtone/surftrio Rock Ventures christmas album vibe

Steve Verbtone mentioned that Dave Pilgrim used a 60's Ampeg Reverb-o-rocket Question & his vintage candy apple red Fender Jaguar for the Freddie's recording

Oh man! This song is so awesome. Too bad it it only 60 seconds. Dave gets an awesome tone. Sometimes it sounds like a tank and other times it doesn't. The dwell is too long. Dave also plays an awesome solo towards the end. Steve is one of my favorite drummers. So much fun.

Ted do you have plans to move back to the pacific northwest in the future?

I'd love to as soon as I could match the good life I got here (read:cheap!). The housing and cost of living drove us out. Lemme know when things get back to normal, but with good jobs available. Very Happy
PS Get Steve to post that mp3!

Geeze... take a day off the internet...
Yup, Ted, Kyle and Jake have the story straight... although supergroup?!! Thanks for the compliment! I'll spend the next little while trying to figure out how to post an MP3.
BTW: There were so many layers of guitar and bells and sleigh bells and stuff that we decided to leave out the keyboard track Dave played. And Jake's right, Daves solo is great AND he just made it up on the spot. I'm pretty sure that there's tank reverb throughout the tune, but what do I know... I'm a drummer. Wink

I posted a 60-second version and the 30-second version as seen on TV. haha

ALSO, it's also being used on the radio (and maybe TV) for Smith's Food & Drug in Utah, Nevada and possibly Idaho.... not sure where they bought media time.

Ho Ho Ho

Cant wait to hear this song! Dave Pilgrim is an incredible musician. Every time we would play portland (which was a lot) we stay at daves and would party till the sun came up, and Dave would always treat us to a couple hours of playing his grand piano or vox to Elvis or Music Machine records almost perfectly. Very good times!

Happiness is being a surf musician that actually surfs. Ride Lord Hunt Surfboards!!!

Yeah, imagine being his roommate! Very Happy Shane, in a now old post I think Ivan (Space Cossacks, Madeira) called him a "nocturnal prince" in regard to this after show ritual with guests. After he realized how late it was getting he also realized that even if he got into his sleeping bag right there in the same room, the organ playing would unabashedly continue. LOL.

I saw you guys many times in Portland and it was always an amazing show! (fire, go-go girls, the gallows!!) Back then I was new to the surf scene and thought seeing The Bomboras, Satan's Pilgrims, The Surf Trio, The Valiants etc. was totally normal. Very good times indeed... and I didn't even know about Dave's parties! He's a totally cool guy and as you said, an incredible musician. Hope you dig the song.

I was way too young to enjoy the mid-late 90s surf scene. That is my biggest regret in life. So much cooler than surf in the 60s.

Jake it was magical the 90s with bands like Satan's Pilgrims The Phantom Surfers, The Tiki Tones, Agent Orange, The Halibuts, Jon & The Night Riders, The Ultras, The Huntington cads, Hillbill soul surfers, Huevos rancheros, Man or Astroman the list goes on, such moments still hangin' in space everytime you pop an SP,PS record or cd
I think we are in the 5th wave of surf music and it's feeling magical and good again with Satan's Pilgrims The Ghastly Ones coming back and all the other great surf bands of today and proud to be a apart of this one and making my contribution to this wave

Cheers

I'm in the exact same boat. But now that I know the scene, I've decided it's time to overcompensate for my surfless past.

The 90's surf music scene easy beats today's but can't of course touch the 1st wave.

I talked with Jeff a bit and I had a few guitar details wrong... Dave played through a well-used Ampeg, but it's the next model bigger than the Reverb-O-Rocket. I'm sure all but maybe 2 of you guys will know what that model is called... but neither one of us know. Confused

The melody line and about half the rhythm tracks were played on Dave's early 60s red Jag, while the solo and the other half of the rhythm tracks were played on Jeff's sunburt Mosrite. All guitars went through Dave's Ampeg and a vintage Fender tank with maybe a teeny bit of Pro-Tools enhancements here and there.

I uploaded a 30-second and 60-second version last night in the Music section, but don't see them available yet.
