Hello,
My suggestion is to make a SG101 Market Place. What I mean by that is to have a place for bands to market their CDs and band related chotchkas. this would be different from the "For Sale /Trade" forum, because it would not be a list of stuff available that just keeps flowing. It would be more like a list of bands and what they have available. I often run into bands with old boxes of CDs or other stuff that they would love to sell, but no way to get the word out. Some of this stuff is not available anywhere else or is out of print. Ok they could post it in the "For Sale /Trade" forum, but you really have to dig through all of the hardware and gear to find stuff. And the stuff just keeps on flowing and thing drop off to another forum page out of sight and out of mind. I am thinking this would be more permanent like list that bands would maintain what they have available. I am always looking for CDs from band to play on the Radio show. But the smaller bands that may burn their own CDs in small quantities or burn a CDR on demand are quite difficult to get. I think this would make it easier for fans and bands to connect.
I am not sure how this would work for folks like Double Crown, RickShaw and CD baby... Maybe it would be a bands only type of thing? I know we don't want to be in competition with them, I want them to thrive too!
Am i crazy or is there a need for this sort of place? I know I would love to be able to find stuff from the bands. It would also help the bands make a little more money from their inventory.
Thanks
Guy

I would like to see a CDs/ etc. for sale area.
but the bands themself would need to take the incentive to post.

How can a band today not have any way to get the word out? E.g. MySpace, Facebook, ReverbNation, and the old fashioned DIY web pages.
I'm not totally down on the idea, and having a central place for it might be convenient, but really how hard is it to find a band's merch these days?

some bands are down right horrible about promoting their merch, and shows.

I suppose that's true; it sounds like those bands would not use anything we created here for them anyway.

Bands and websites are a mess, it is like a band identity crisis. Like you said info could be on facebook, myspace or any of lots of other places. Finding what they have is a lot of work for the average fan. I have no idea how many band on SG101 have CDs available. Right now I could try to ask each one, or go to each band's myspace/facebook. In reality I would end up googling each band and then hunting around on the pages you find to find out if there was something available. I probably search a lot harder than the average fan. If there was a place you could go to to look it would be much easier for the average SG101 user. The incentive for the bands would be selling their merch and making a little money. I would rather buy direct from the band because they would make more money from the purchase. I like to support the bands as much as I can. This would be a way to make sure they get maximum money for their CDs. I go to a lot of shows where the band brings in a box with merch in it. When the box goes home with them it probably gets put in the back of closet with no other way to buy it. Other bands that have their CDs for sale in stores it is much easier, but ones who don't are quite difficult to even find out that they have something available.
I am thinking of something similar to a forum. Where the bands would be listed in alphabetical order. Almost like a thread for each band. In the thread would be a a plce to list their merch. The band would have to figure out how they want to be paid. Probably paypal.
Maybe it would be a bust, I know it would be much easier to find CDs from band that are only available directly from the bands.
Thanks

Atleast having a link to their merch pages would help a lot. I know of 3 bands in Cincinnati that don't have anyone in their band that is computer savey enough to setup their own web page. They have CDs and merch, but of course they also have no label. The only way they market their stuff is at shows, if you are not local and can make it to one of their shows, you are out of luck. It would be more like a listing of bands with ther merch and how to get it.
Maybe we should do a survey to see first if bands would put their stuff on there and second if fans would find in useful to help them find what is out there.

Guy, if they aren't computer savy,
how are they going to put it on SG101?
or, are you going to do it for them?

If it was as easy as posting something to a forum it would not take a lot computer expertise. It is a lot easier to post something on a site than it is to design your own site. I do computer stuff for a living and feel fairly confident in my skills, but I don't feel confident that I could make a nice web page. I understand HTML, but lack the artistic side. Maybe it is just a bad idea, It dosen't seem like anyone else has any interest.
