I have not had a gig in nearly 5 years. I am going to playing for nearly 100 people this Friday. I am actually feeling a little nervous. I never actually have felt nervous getting on stage. I am sure it will subside after playing. Hopefully I don't fall on my face.

I went about 16 years without a gig. First gig back was Nov 2008, I was a basket case beforehand but I got through it OK.
I'm sure you will too.

I get nervous as hell every single time we play. It has only gotten worse the older I have gotten. The worse part is that I tense up when this happens and find it very difficult to trill pick...

yeah it just sucks because I am the worst in the group and I have rise to their level. We are doing jazzy arrangements of Christmas songs and a few instros. I am the weakest player in the group and they are all counting on me. I have been practicing my ass off the past few weeks, but I don't know if I am ready.

Baffle 'em with Bullshit!
ATTITUDE my man-works every time.
You are in the best situation for YOU. Better than playing with a bunch of inferior players! Now go out there and kick ass!

You'll be fine Dan. A bit of nervous energy is good and will keep you on your toes. It will be gone after the first tune.

You'll do fine..give yourself some credit..your bandmates feel you're up for it or they would not be there..and if they are good players, that gives you a good safety net as well. Remember the audience is not hanging on every note you play...it will only get easier

3 shows in a weekend? That is a hell of a way to break yourself in. Also, as someone else pointed out, being the weakest of the musicians really is a great place to be. Everything is not riding on your performance. Even more, you are in a position to learn from the other guys instead of vice/versa. It is a win win situation.
Best of luck to you this weekend. I am sure you guys will knock it out.

Everyone gets nervous before going onstage. It's totally natural. Just remember to slow down and enjoy it-you can use that adrenaline to your advantage! And 3 shows is amazing, you get to improve every night.
Rock out.

Well, the shows might not have been perfect. But we dressed really well and got some style points...

Thanks for all the kind words and inspiration.
We are going to play one more show and then part ways because of our schedules. It was fun. I have not played in a band since college and those were the days were I was just riffing out power chords with distortion.
I honestly did not realize how much work goes behind playing real shows especially when the members are adults with careers and family responsibilities.
And for all you guys touring and gigging regularly, major props to you all. You have nothing but my utmost admiration and respect giving the gift of music to the world.
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to everyone...

I hate when the adrenaline wears off, usually i can hold it until we're on stage, but when it wears off beforehand, I become such a mess. Tremolo picking becomes impossible. My first gig, I got so nervous, not during our first song, but the second (because I had to sing), I could not play the tremolo intro to save my life. Biggest fail. Luckily I pulled it together and everyone loved the song and looked past the little mishap.

Falling on your face is guaranteed to get the audience on your side. Especially if you jump up and say "and now for my next number"...
I always seem to go many years without playing with anyone. I didn't play in front of anyone from 85 till 97 (mostly due to being married), 2002 till 2006, and nothing fast from 2002 till 2010.
Having to sing has to make things worse and I don't know how anyone can do it. My biggest worry before doing surf gigs in 2010 was being too out of shape to get the job done. It wasn't till I stopped playing surf for a long time that I realized how much effort surf guitar players were also putting into it.
Dating back to my punk band days in the 80's, I made sure that we always started off with a song that sounded cool but was easy to play. Once that first song is done (assuming you don't have to sing), it all falls in line, which is good, because you look less foolish falling on your face when there is a whole line of other people doing it.
