And no, I'm not talking guitar picks here. I am looking to pick up some stuff to expand my surf collection even further, and wanted to make sure I'm not missing some essentials.
Here's my crack shot, in no particular order:
1) The Nebulas - Nebula One
2) Satan's Pilgrims - Plymouth Rock (yes, it's a best of but that way I don't REALLY have to choose)
3) Hypnotic IV - Go Baby Go
4) The Infrareds - Recorded on Microfilm
5) Man or Astro-man?: Live Transmissions from Uranus

I feel kinda bad leaving Dick Dale off here, so Mr. Eliminator #6.

Aren't these things usually ten items?
1.) Ventures - Live in Japan '65
2.) DD - Samurai Surf Guitar (disc 1)
3.) Surf Coasters - On Stage DVD (I am aware this is totally cheating.)
4.) Jim Messina & The Jesters - The Dragsters
5.) Satan's Pilgrims - Creature Feature
-Warren
— That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it.

Excluding vinyl only and V/A compilations, my list could look something like:
* New Dimensions : Best Of
-
Surfaris : Fun City, USA
-
Astronauts : Surfing With
-
Jim Messina & the Jesters : The Dragsters
-
Dick Dale : Surfin' And A Swingin'

How did I know that Klas would have all old bands?
All great picks by the way.
I'm gonna streach the rules a bit, as most Dessert island picks I see in magazines are always 10. So I'm gonna break it into 5 old and 5 new
(In no order)
old
The Shadows-30 Greatest hits of the( Aussie comp of 2 english best of's)
The Surfaris-Fun City USA,& The Surfaris Play(2 fer on repitore records)
Astronauts- Movin' (Japanese Best of - Instros only)
Jim Messina and the Jesters-The Dragsters(too bad it comes with a crappy other album)
Dick Dale- The Singles and other great stuff( bootleg best of on gold cdr)
New
Pollo Del Mar- The Golden State
The Huntington Cads- Go Exotic
Space Cossacks-Intersteller Stomp
Insect Surfers-Death Valley Coastline
The Nebulas-Nebula One

5 Satan's Pilgrims albums = 5 picks! But, seriously I would have an ipod with all my favorite stuff - takes up less space. Notwithstanding that, I'd go with the Cossacks and Pilgrims "best of" comps, Ghastly Ones "A Haunting..." Fathoms "Fathomless," and Bomboras "Head Shrinkin' Fun"...or the first 3 discs of the Cowabunga Box + the Pilgrims and Cossacks comps

Trashmen - Tube City (best of)
Astronauts - Rarities
Eddie and the Showmen - Squad Car
Guitar Player Presents: Legends of Guitar-Surf vol 1
The Ventures - Walk Don't Run, The best of

Haha, yeah I guess I'm more into the 1st wave era but I do like newer bands as well. However, none of them could compete in my top 5.
bigtikidude
Astronauts- Movin' (Japanese Best of - Instros only)
Even though I already have all the included tracks on different Astronauts releases, I've been thinking of getting this one if it wasn't for the horrible artwork...
bigtikidude
Jim Messina and the Jesters-The Dragsters(too bad it comes with a crappy other album)
I agree the Jesters album is the far better of the two but I still think the Adrian and the Sunsets album is really good.

Heh, my list would be quite similar:
Eddie & The Showmen - Squad Car
Jim Messina & The Jesters - The Dragsters
Fender IV recordings
Astronauts - Competition Coupe
Lively Ones - Surf Rider
On another note, I just heard Untamed Youth for the first time yesterday, and I really liked their sound. Good stuff.
