Single-cut, copper finish, left-handed, with a Bigsby.

Never been much of an electric guitarist, although I tested the waters a few years back with a Galaxie IV.

But I've just had this sound in my head the past couple of months, and it is a low rumbling twangy sound, and I decided to go for it.

Should be here in two weeks, just in time for my vacation.

Now I need to save up for an amp and a reverb tank . . .

Congratulations! The baritone is by far my favourite electric guitar (I have a Dano Hodad). You'll love it.

D'Addario makes a set specifically for that guitar. Make sure you get XL155's (and tune E-E). Right GuitarBob?
You'll love the Bigsby. I have a Gretsch Electromatic tuned E-E with a Bigsby. Hit that low E and dip it a full step-Ow!
Maybe we should do an instro version of "Big Bottom" at SG101-2011.

I've been checking out some Urban Surf Kings bari videos on Youtube. Awesome stuff.

Rev, anytime you want to share your accumulated wisdom regarding baris, I'm all ears.

What is it exactly? A Baritone or a Bass? I'm not sure that Bari- gtrs. have the same string scale do they?

The D'Addario XL-155 set is for 30-inch scale E to E bass six guitars. That's low.

Baritones are in the middle. I'm not familiar with the scale length of a B to B baritone. Not saying it won't work though.

I used to just move one string over and tune my Jazzmaster down to B to B when I played in the Belair Boys. The scale was too short and rubbery, but it worked.

Bob-Technically, you are right, but the line between Bass and Baritone has become blurred. The Jerry Jones "Baritone" design is based on the original Dano 6-string bass design and is correctly tuned E-E. The XL-155's are made specifically for Jerry Jones instruments.
According to Steve Soest, who was heavily involved in the development of the first Dano import reissues, the Baritones will handle B-B tuning with Baritone strings and E-E with the XL-155's or equivalent. I confirmed that with one I owned and tuned E-E.
I now have a Gretsch Electromatic Bari with a Bigsby, and according to the owner, it came from the factory tuned E-E. It has a 30" scale as well.
Unfortunately, I found out the hard way that the new Dead-on '67 Dano Bari's will not handle The XL-155's due to bridge issues, so I strung it with the right strings and dumped it.

Mine is gonna be tuned B rather than low E. 28 inch scale.

And I really don't know what I'm going to do with it. Some old friends are putting a band back together (sort of a more rockabilly version of the Puppini Sisters), and I'm daydreaming that I could do a set of instrumentals with the band as an opening act.

Good move. My singlecut JJ baritone is one of the most soulful instruments ever. Those p/us are sweet! It sort of takes you somewhere else musically. You might find yourself straddling bass line territory and the more usual guitar zone. It's not exactly either one. Good luck with it.

I've been trying to think it through a little on a standard E-to-E guitar while I wait for the bari . . . so far I'm rather slow when it comes to saying, we're in the key of E, so I need to pretend we're in A, etc. But then I realize that on a bari, when I-IV-V changes in E go to the V . . . I'll have a low B string and a Bigsby, and I can do some super-low Duane Eddy twangin'.

That happened the first gig with the six-piece band when I tuned my JazzMaster to B. I had to think fast all night—smoke started coming outa my ears

I'm mainly a saxophonist, so I've encountered this before switching from a Bb tenor to an Eb baritone. If I think about it, I go off the rails. On a good day, some subconscious level of my brain remembers the circle of fifths, and it all works out.

Still waiting . . . on vacation next week, so hopefully I'll get a few days of quality time before I have to go back to work.

Got an unexpected inquiry about playing a bass gig, which got me wondering if I should've gone Bass VI instead. Save my pennies, I guess.

These guys surf the lower waves. I kind of like their sound. I've bought some of their cuts very cheerfully and I need to buy the rest. I don't know if they have an actual CD, but that would be better.

Bikini Wipeout, La Palma and Sunset Rider are particularly nice. Great brooding sound. Of course, I always like another Wipeout. I have it indirectly through Sandy Buckles that the lead uses a Jaguar baritone with a Stew Mac vibrato bridge. He tunes in A.

JPL, don't forget to post a pic. I'd love to see a copper single cutaway baritone with Bigsby!

Or a late closing set. Tends to be a lower key experience. (smile) I've seen that done, as with the Bloody Fives (garage) and the Chan Plan (instrumental) (a/k/a Fausett & the Hesters) in Denver. Don't screw around too much between the sets or you can lose the audience.

Well, my days of playing out are probably behind me . . . but I sure wouldn't want to wait until the fourth set to get started. Nope, I'd be fine with opening, then going home and sleeping.

Ran into some delays on this bari --- sounds like Jerry Jones might be out of lefty Bigsbys for the time being. This is a drag.
