Greetings Surfland, Here are a few photos I took yesterday at Don the
Beachcomber. Enjoy!!

Rich, Photog4surfbands@yahoo.com

I have to say a big THANK YOU to Mike and Sandy from the Ninth Wave who came out to Calif from Conn to see the show. They unselfishly gave their time helping me at the desk where I was collecting $$ and doing wrist bands. 235 people paid entries and 60+ band members with guests, we were at capacity of 300. Mike and Sandy did the raffle tickets. 1 for the surfboard, 1 for the Jag guitar, 1 for the effects pedal, and 1 for general merchandise. It kept them busy and thanks again for the help.

From where we were you could not see the bands, but we definitely HEARD them. They could have just as easily sat at a table and watched the show, but like true SURF troopers they are, they dug in and helped where it was needed.

Eddie was blown away with the outpouring of love and money for him, and was there from about 3pm to 6pm. Thanks to a big recliner chair from my living room Jeff took for him to sit in. I'm sure that made it possible for him to stay more than 1 hour he would have , if not for the chair.

Thanks for everyone reading this for either coming to the show or any donations sent to Jeff for the raffle or sale. It all helps. I also know who I want backing me if I ever get sick or down on my luck. Well enough blabber fingers for now, It's Super Bowl time and I want to watch the commercials.

The Eddie and the Showmen Tribute Band was a great enegetic set by John Benton and Paul Blair on guitars, Dick dodds on drums, JIm Frias on sax, and Matt on bass. Smiles all around. Magic.

Duh Doh!!!

Bob

Bob

what a totally-amazing day for a surf-beat junkie!!

I am so glad I made the decision to attend (and also see Dick Dale the night before!!), and I am so so grateful to The TarantinosNYC for stepping up and Guest MC-ing my SHINDIG at Otto's on Feb. 5

I will be putting together a FLICKR file of all my pix from the event (as well as for DICK DALE). Same be said for the videos I shot. I will create a thread for the videos in the Forum for "Videos" and the videos will go in there on a rolling basis (1 band at a time). Each time the Thread is updated with another series of videos, I will post a link here back to that thread

To Jeff + Tim -- my goodness, what an amazing moment you guys threw together; Sean, Tiki Tena -- thanks for the enthusiastic energy from you both -- the Facebook "page" in particular

This was the first time I actually met Eddie Bertrand, though we have conversed by phone occasionally. The love for this man was on full display on Feb 5th, and as already stated elsewhere here, he was overwhelmed by it. Shout-out to all the bands who gave their time and effort on Eddie's behalf; and to those who contributed 'merch' to raise money -- bless you all.

This was a terrific example that yet again demonstrated what a loving "community" the 'instro surf' crowd is. Like my East Coast colleagues -- Mike 'Staccato' Rosado and Sandy/'Oceana' (from the 9th Wave) -- who so lovingly got themselves involved in setting up the event, and working the front door, etc. This kind of giving without expectation of return is very typical of Mike, and the bands that make up N.E.S.M.A. For example, a guitar spring breaks...if Mike is there, he will lend his guitar and restring the other one, without hesitation. When an amp suddenly stops working properly, the first guy on stage to either try and get the amp going again and/or bringing up his amp to replace the defective one -- yeah, it's Mike.

the event kind of had the feel of the SG101 Convention, actually. Any chance that the 2011 Convention can be held at Don's? (Forgive me if in the SG101 Convention thread or elsewhere that Jeff has already announced where the SG101 Convention will be held this Summer....)

TWANG IT, AND THEY WILL COME....

Great event, Christina and I had a blast! Outstanding in every way. Very smooth running of the event, the bands were on and off the stage quickly and on time. Enjoyed meeting many new people.

I shot a little bit of video of each of the bands and it came out good. I'll compile it together into a short sampler and post a link to it when I get it done.

Thanks to everyone who organized and supported this event with their time and donations!

Looking forward to SG101 convention 2011!

shout-out to SHELBY COBRA who bought a great deal of raffle tickets on Saturday! The result? He won a lot of the raffles!! Totally cool that you did that my good man

BTW I got my NYS Drivers License in my Senior Year of High School (1969/1970). I only mention that b/c I took my State Road Test on a SHELBY COBRA (orange!!) GT 350 (but 'automatic')!! That car had so much power that my foot was more often on the brake pedal rather than the accelorater pedal!

UNSTEADY FREDDIE

Thanks to all who donated raffle prizes! I'm diggin' my Space Rangers CD!

Thanks for the Kudos and review Freddy, and Shelby Cobra,(damn, forgot your real name)

I really like Dons a lot.
but I think that the Starting Gate in Los Alamitos is better for the convention.
just for the fact of parking and more inside room.
and if the convention keeps growing, we may need a bigger place than starting gate someday.
Shocked

Thanks for coming out for the weekend guys.

Jeff(btd)

Jeff(bigtikidude)

This event started as an idea in my head as I was sitting with Eddie at The Veterans Hospital on this past Veteran's Day. Eddie had surgery several days earlier and had just been given a dose of some heavy duty pain meds. He was floating off back to his glory days and I was alone with my thoughts. I tried to think of what we could do to help Eddie spiritually and financially. I pictured an event like this.

As I drove away from the hospital, I called Jeff told him Eddie needs us and what I had in mind. Jeff made the rest happen. He reached out to the bands as well as Dons. In a few more hours we had more bands graciously volunteer their services than we could possibly accommodate.

First I have to say a huge think you to all the bands. Everyone showed up with a great attitude. Any egos were left at home. Everyone was an absolute pleasure to work with. There were no issues at all.

Some of the memorable moments for me:

As I was about to introduce the Riptides, one of the band members asked me for just one second. He picked up a can of "finger ease" that had been left on the stage. He sprayed some in his hair then said they were ready to roll.

Dave Arnson... I thought he was going to set his guitar on fire. I was looking around for a fire extinguisher. Jon Paul was thumping away on bass and yelling to me "He's going crazy!" Understatement of the evening. Maybe Eddie was channeling through Dave? Hope someone got some video.

Belairs reunion and Eddie and The Showmen set were beyond cool. Dick Dodd was epic on the drums. When he took the mic to tell Eddie he loved him, very special.

All the bands and musicians gave very inspired performances.

Eddie addressed the crowd from his chair. He was very moved and grateful. Eddie and his family send their thanks to everyone.

A huge thanks to Jeff, his father Craig, Eddie's attorney and friend Peggi Collins, brother John Bertrand and all the volunteers.

As special request to anyone posting videos. Please post a link to Eddie's paypal fund.

Lets do it again in the south bay!

Congratulations guys. I look forward to the pics and videos. I wish I could have been there.
