A question for anyone who has experience with the CDBaby distribution process: were you pleased with their services? Any positive or negative experiences out there?
thanks for your attention to this matter at this time,
-dp

I'm VERY happy with CD Baby. Even two years later, we're still making like $25 a month of selling our music. They put your music on all the pertinent online sites as well (napster, iTunes, etc.). I think they may have even been the ones to put our disc on Amazon (though not the copy listing at $41).
I have no hesitations in recommending them.

Dave,
I dont have any cds to sell, but I have bought cds from CD Baby. They give great service, and unbelivable follow up service. I have never had a company email me to make sure everything arrived ok. But CD Baby did.
I told them the cd case was broken when it arrived, and they offered to replace it. I didn't even ask for a replacement, they offered!
So far I have had nothing but outstanding service from them. They even tell you how much money goes to the bands!

I've never bought anything from cdbaby before. I usually go to Double Crown, Sundazed, or Bada Bing. I'll have to check it out, especially after reading the previous posts.

As a customer I don't care for CDBaby's name, layout, or selection, and so on. I'd much rather do business through somebody else.

CD Baby has been good to The Pyronauts. As far as I can tell it is the best way for an independent band to get on iTunes and the like. We've done some good sales on iTunes. It costs $30 to set up, but after that nothing.
They take $4 per physical CD that you sell.
The biggest draw back is there credit card program. They take something like 11% which kinda sucks... BUT they don't take any money if you don't sell anything. So I just keep telling myself that those are sales that never woulda happened anyway.
It's so cool getting checks from them though!

The band categories doesn't work quite as well as it could, for instance what CDBaby might consider surf music very often isn't but overall importing is fairly quick and painless. I like it a lot.

I'm pretty happy with them so far, but I do wonder about the future. Derek Sivers sold CDBaby off last year (and apparently took the email list with him, judging by the spam he sends out from sivers.org, considering that he doesn't own CDBaby any more).

If you're not selling through CDBaby, you're missing out on all kinds of sales that you would never make on your own.

Looking through my spam, I found a message from CDBaby. Seems like the new owners are already changing things. Check out the new TOS:

Dontcha love the part that says that if you don't meet your threshold in 12 months, they give your money away?

Section 7.3 says if you don't make your threshold payments in a year, then yes, they "can" give it away. But I don't think a <$10 giveaway is all that unreasonable (you can lower the threshold from the $50 default).
Maybe they're trying to tame the accounting nightmares.

What nightmares? It's one of the things I'm paying them for!

That's the truth.
Due to steady, consistent sales on CDBaby Mercury Four actually had to repress our 1st CD, something I never thought we'd have to do.

I'm very happy with CD Baby. They took a while this summer to put our album online, especially for the digital distribution, but it is very easy and they do a good job in the end.

I just wish their new website was as user friendly as their old site.
