i'm going to make another attempt at using garage band to record my contribution to the sg101 comp. i am forced into using one of the drum loops but everything else i will play myself. what is the usual order most people use to record music? do you put down the bass track, then the rhythm and last of all the lead?

I put down basic rhythm on guitar. Even if it isn't going to be in the song. I do it, of course, to a metronome. After that, there is no set order. It should all really all depend on the specific song you are recording. Sometimes lead is easy to put on right after rhythm, and other time you want to get everything down before you do lead.
Carol, if you have some spare money, I highly recommend getting ProTools LE or M-Powered(same thing except you need an M-Audio interface with M-Powered). I really hate Garageband, it is typical Mac crappy introduction software that is handicapped on purpose. With ProTools I find myself able to be more creative and flexible in my recordings. It has more post-production options as well.

No, not Logic Express. I don't feel horribly proficient with ProTools either, but if I can get a track recorded and that is pretty much what I need. I can come across things accidentally after that.

I usually do drums -> rhythm -> lead -> bass -> vocals.
Just kidding about that last one, but I like doing bass last for some reason.

Carol,
Generally, I agree you would record drums first, but if you are using a drum machine, you might want to record your rythm guitar track at the same time as the drum track, either onto separate tracks (if you have them) or together with the drum tracks.
Then move onto bass and lead.
Have fun!

I usually record the main guitar part (be it rhythm or riff) along with a click or looped beat, then I'll record the other parts and go back and perfect the drum track later.

This is the way I work... unless you found inspiration first in the form of a bass, or other type of instrument. I use Logic Studio, maybe I could put together a starting template for you, Carol. Let me think about that. ~ dave

I always wanted to ask the group what your "work" guitar is...the one you keep on a stand by your system for when inspiration hits, but rarely record. Mine is a beat up classical guitar and an old Kramer.
But anyway, I also usually record all rhythm guitar parts on the old classical guitar to a metro. After I record basic chords structures for verse, chorus and bridge, I use Cubase to manipulate the sections, cut and paste to build the tune. Sometime I leave as is, but usually extend a section or drop a section, etc. Then record with whatever guitar. Then add some drip, some keys, some lead, then drums, then bass last for some reason.

I nearly always do drums & bass first; I find it's nice to have a complete rhythm section to layer guitars or keys on top of. Kind of builds it from the bottom up.

I think the starting template would really help you Carol. Hopefully that is a file Dave can send you. If not, there are probably preset "tracks" that you might be able to use, it might be way too many tracks but at least they are ready to be recorded. And once you get a track down, that is a step in the right direction.

Here's my working method:
Lead guitar - Rythmn guitar - Lead guitar again - rythmn guitar again - bass - drums - lead guitar again - bass again - change my mind about the drums - change my mind about the middle bit - start all over again - file it somewhere and forget about it.
Works for me!

That overwhelmed feeling usually means you are about to learn something new and your brain is being resized.

That offered, I have found that the threat of havng to learn Adobe Premiere Elements (which is not exactly rocket science) has made me much cleverer at getting by with Windows Movie Maker (which is tinker toys, and not a very large set of them either).

Carol, I'll get to making a template for you, but have been working very long daze at the fender ranch. Wish you had Logic Studio because in Logic Express you don't have Space Designer, and I don't think you have a EXS24 sampler, so I need to be a little creative working around that.
What interface do you have?

i figured out garageband last year (sort of) and i've been watching some of the logic tutorials and it looks somewhat similar.
here's what i have besides my macbook------- a snowball microphone which i used my last attempt at recording, straight off the amp into the computer. that attempt i also just plugged my bass straight into the computer with a lightsnake usb cable and used one of the preset bass tones.
i also have a tube microphone preamp that i played around with but didn't use.
