I should add that I think some of the criticism of your stuff is a bit harsh and unwarranted, however, the "full of yourself" hype with which you've presented yourself is probably what is causing this reaction. Most people on this forum are extremely supportive, as many of the critiques of the sg101 comp tracks clearly show; I've never seen anyone's humble amateur efforts belittled here before. If anything they usually receive praise and encouragement. That said, you do have some cool riffs happening on you're myspace page, I just don't like how it's put together. Just my opinion of course.

I was thinking the exact same thing yesterday while working.

I admire your work Coffin Dagger man. Your recordings are thrilling. Even your cover of that humble song Penetration is thrilling. Your original "Avenue X" is wonderful (but then I grew up by Avenue V in Brooklyn). I should appreciate hearing your impressions in more detail. I'd like to send you a "private message" but I do not know how this works.

Regarding the alleged "full of myself" thing, the statements people are objecting to are in advertisements, and advertisements are intended to draw interest and sales--which is what advertisements are for. In discussing matters with other people on these threads I have not boasted or claimed superiority. However, several people have made plenty of unnecessary derogatory remarks. So some people object to my advertisements, this I understand. The ad hominem attacks are inappropriate and uncouth.

Regarding judging an album by listening to clips and a few songs, this is like "judging a book by its cover." Anything less than the whole truth is a half truth, and doubly so when it is knowing and deliberate.

Regarding the irresistibility of making rude remarks...I am not capable of controlling other people's actions...if they are compelled to act in a rude way they bear full responsibility for their own compulsions.

At some point Surf Music got co-opted by Brainiacs on both sides of the fence. It's teen music created by, and for, teens in the early 60's. This is all that matters...

It's pretty ironic - a bunch of married guys in their 40s talking about how great teenagers scoping for chicks are. Very Happy

Norm, you and I have a pretty different view of surf music, but I personally could care less - cause the Ghastlies make great music! Whatever other things you like to do that are connected to that is fine by me, and I dig the schtick and the album covers and the sound effects, the whole thing. But if the music wasn't good, I couldn't care less about the rest.

I don't know how many of you guys have much dealings with teenagers, but I teach at a college, and many of my students are 18-19. I'm painfully aware of how little I have in common with them. And seeing them, I'm also made even more painfully aware that I have zero desire to be like that again! There are no teenagers playing surf music right now (that i know of) - as far as teenagers are concerned, surf music doesn't exist. So, how do we, guys in their 40s or even older, play this music which was started by teenagers, without looking or feeling stupid? Is surf music allowed to grow into something more than what it was in '62?

I'm not very old, but my guess is that kids today are very different in a few ways from kids in the 50's and 60's.

Richard,

You wondered if kids today are very different from a few years ago. It used to be sex, drugs, and rock-n-roll. The first two don't change, so kids are at least 2/3 the same as they were.

The mass appeal of music is somewhat how it resembles sex and drugs. In more innocent times, before birth control pills became omnipresent, surf music was risque. Surfers wore only skimpy swimsuits (sexy!) and the music had more energy than previous music (drug-like stimulant).

The Beatles & Stones & Hendrix rolled in as birth control pills did and everything changed. Sex and drugs were much heavier, and so was the rock-n-roll. And things have kept on going down the same road...
