One for the exotica crowd?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LoUff3M5pT0
This was sounding familiar and then it dawned ... I think it is essentially el Zorongo, or, in surf music circles, Exotic. More along the line of the initial versions of this, e.g., by Jim Waller & the Deltas or Al Garcia & the Rhythm Kings, which are closer to the Spanish folk melody. The familiar rave through this by the Sentinals strays pretty far from that version. Not sure what cross-fertilization process produced this, let alone Exotic itself, credited to Bruce Morgan.
The refrain, which starts a bit after 1:00 if I analyze this correctly (Mgrdichian on oud?), was last heard in the surf version by the Original Surfaris (refrain c. 0:40). As I recall Myers also has it. It's missing from the Sentinals and Renegaids versions. The El Caminos cover the Original Surfaris so they are the only recent band to use the refrain (c 0:43). Other bands cover the Sentinals mostly. Nobody has ever covered the original that I am aware of.
It looks like this is from an LP called Jazz and Xitzaz intended apparently as a horrible Greek pun "Jazz and Hidjaz." (My hat is off to the guy who came up with that. Run, my friend, run. I'll try to distract them.)
"Recorded : mid-60's : Phil Woods, Iordanis Tsomidis, George Mgrdichian, John Yalenezian, Chet Amsterdam, Sauren Baronian, William Costa, Stewart Scharf, Bill Lavorgna, Seymour Salzberg"

I half-inched this off the net a couple of years ago, it's very similar to your youtube. Great covers of Besame Mucho and Harlem Nocturne.

I need to add your link to the discussion there,
but it will have to wait, as I need to hit it for the night.

Looks interesting! Is this what you mean?

Sounds more Latin than Middle Eastern, however.

Well, Agent Orange does Exotic. Sentinals version, basically. It's on
KFJC 1999 Surf Compilation: Waves of the West
Sadly, I have never heard them play it live.
Nice version, but I'd say blown away in that style by Ryan and the boys, Surf Report on
Lava Rock Reverb
Also Sentinals.
I would have missed Tiki Ti, however.
My own trivia question, though I have blabbed the answer several times. Who covers the Renegaids version of Exotic? This has been released in some exotic surf collections, but the original LP Surf Crazy has never been reissued. It has some great stuff on it, too. Let me see, what is the prize? The highly unofficial Exotic/Zorongo car CD, maybe. A beer at the next SG101 can be substituted at the winner's option. The Exotic Memorial Beer.
Another question, no prize: who played Exotic at the first SG101 at Suzy's? What technical problem did they realize that they needed to address just as they started playing?

The song is identified as Nica in the YouTube clip and as "Nica (Norman Gold)" in the notes shown in the video. In the AllMusic database it is confused with a song of the same name by Sonny Clark. But I think that's something different. Also different from Nica's Dream by Phil Woods (who was involved with this recording). There are a number of songs named Nica or Nika or one of those plus something else. Nicaea (Greek Nikaia, Turkish Iznik) a city/district in NE Anatolia (Turkey) might also be relevant.

The Nica in this list on Deep Orient, Vol. 1 is the same Nica as the one on YouTube, and is credited here to Sonny Clark. But I suspect this is one of AllMusic's errors ... like their assumption that all people named Al Garcia are the same. I have tried to get that one corrected, but no dice. Their article is about Albert(o) Garcia, but it has a picture of Alan Garcia.
