Permalink Our New CD with Backing Tracks

New Topic

We have just released our new instrumental surf guitar CD, self titled “Eddie and the Sand Sharks.”

There are a dozen songs, all covers of some of the classics. We tried to bring something different to them by utilizing a wide variety of instruments and mixing in a number of original leads.

This is a two CD set. The first CD contains the complete songs.

The second CD removes the leads to form backing tracks (so there are 24 tracks in total). For those of you that are looking for backing tracks to classic surf songs, I suspect that you will like these. One thing to keep in mind is that our version of the Theme from The Endless Summer is a little different and the backing track reflects this.

As an amateur, it was a great experience for me to be able to play and record with a couple of professionals who have been doing this for decades.

Eddie Montana is the leader of the project and plays numerous instruments on the CD. All of the non-traditional guitar leads on the record were done by Eddie.

Charlie Ewing is similarly flexible, playing bass, drums, and some of the keyboards, while also serving as our engineer.

Eddie and Charlie have worked together recording for years, so it was really fascinating to watch how they complemented each other, particularly in the mixing process.

Here is a link to the CD and individual tracks:

You can also buy it at Eddie's store, Seal Beach Music (it's 15 bucks if you buy it in the store).

I thought that it might be interesting to list the instruments used on the recording. In some of the leads, if you hear a guitar that sounds unusual, it's probably the Cabronita Tele with TV Jones pickups.

Charvel Offset Electric 12-String

There was an initial mistake on cdbaby for the pricing of the CD, which looked really high. This has been corrected.

The CD is now $15 and you can download all 24 tracks for $11.99.

Sorry about that.

Paul

i'll check this out as i'm always looking for 'someone' to play with

for those who don't know.
Colt Surf (Wayne) was the one that donated a G&L guitar to raffle off at the
SG101 convention.

for that alone.
please check out his cd, and buy it please.

Bump for this. It is still:
- available.
- an OUTSTANDING deal!
- a ginormously great idea (backing tracks, wish more folks would do that for those of us laboring in obscurity for the sheer joy of it - hint, hint)

search-engine food: new to surf music backing tracks

Hey Wes,

Thanks for the bump. We appreciate the kind sentiments!

The reason that more bands don't do backing tracks is probably the cost of royalties for covers (you have to pay for both the song with lead and the backing version). Those royalty costs have gone up a lot in recent years with the various forms of media you have to pay.

If you have not already seen it, you might also check out the Downloads section of this site. There are some fine backing tracks made by this talented community.

All the best,

Paul

All the best,

Interesting; did not know that about the royalty thing. I do use the download b/t section too. I'm just working on a bucket list of stuff for home. It's fun, and knuckling down to 'get' something good enough to stick the mic in front of the amp is making for better playing.

Thanks again; sounds like it was a fun one to make.
