Hi, I'm pretty limited gear wise and permittable-volume wise for guitar recording. Does anyone have any success with direct recording? any tips?

I have guitar rig and it sounds 'ok' actually, but it's alittle stale. i'm more interested in recording than live right now.
wondering if anyone has tried using full on gear/amps but bypassing speakers/using only the preamp section and using impulse responses or speaker simulations. volume and microphones (+room!) are my biggest setbacks.

anyone ever seen/tried this? like a tube amp with no speaker with a preamp level out.

The problem with direct recording is that in older tube amps you can't bypass the speakers, you can record direct, but noise is still going to come out since if you disconnect the speaker than you are going to ruin your amp.

You can plug any guitar directly in if you have the proper interface. Also most recording software these days has some sort of pre-amp. It is unlikely you will get a good trad surf sound, but you can definitely find your own sound using that method, depending on exactly what you want.

One room mic is preferable over direct in my book. Especially for surf.

For amps that don't have a DI out, you can add one to them. Weber has the bits and pieces for DIY mod:

Balanced/Unbalanced IO

Or a ready built unit where you run the speaker output of your amp into, then out of and to the speaker. Made for headphones but it'll work as a DI.

Weber Headphone Adapter

Sometimes, nothing beats a Shure SM57 in front of the amp. When we do this, we use a Radial JDI on the guitar to capture the raw guitar sound unprocessed and record it:

Radial JDI

Then we use a Radial XAMP to play back the recorded guitar into the amp, and we can tweak the amp, pedal board and mike placement to get the sound you're looking for and you don't have to be playing:

I've been using Propellerhead "Record". It has unlimited tracks, every plugin you can think of and it's very easy to deal with. Costs about $200.

You can plug in direct and use all the amp models.

Are you running it with Reason?

Have you tried Logic 9? It has quite amazing amp emulators. I played some time with that and the results can be very good. Haven't used it completely though. But you would still need a good audio interface (I mean a decent soundcard if you want to call it this way): m-audio, alesis, motu...

going direct, and re-amping or re-effecting afterwards is an interesting technique, the downside is that you lose any beneficial ambient noise...that could be good...or bad.

I like "ambient room noise" in my recordings...it makes them warmer, easier to "like"...more enjoyable. Natural reverb and all that...

if you are in a place where you might disturb others, or where others might disturb you, then direct might be the better way to go.

I don't ... but it matches right up if that's your thing.

I was just curious as I have Reason, but I use Pro Tools instead of Record. Reason can be used with Pro Tools via re-wire but i wasn't sure if there was any special Reason and Record at the same time benefits.
