Yeah, vintage stuff tends to feel better/different. My Jazzmaster came today and I was shocked at how different it felt. It feels lighter than my AV Jag although not much lighter than the AV Jazzmasters I've played. The neck is the huge difference. The neck is amazing. The frets are so similar to a '65 ES-345 I recently played(that is the Back to the Future guitar by the way). I really didn't expect it to feel so much better than my Jags or the Jazzmasters I've played. As for sound... I don't know yet. I have yet to string it to my liking and the pickups were AV and I have a vintage set on their way to my house. The nitro on the neck feels great as well.

Was this on ebay?

Wow! I TOTALLY expected you to say it sucked!!!! Seriously though, congrats on the amazing score. Still can't believe what you paid. You've set the "Can you believe what I got for just over a grand" bar very very high indeed Cheers

From what I've heard the vintage stuff tends to be a little lighter because all the moisture has been drained out of the wood over time. Kinda makes sense, I guess?
Good luck with it!!

That does make sense actually. I had never thought of that before. It just has a different feel.

I had always thought Fender's were poorly made compared to Gibsons but I disagree now. Just modern Fenders. Although I don't play many modern Gibsons. I haven't played a modern Gibson in over a year and it wasn't that great.

Keep in mind yours is a 71 and the AVs are based on the 1962 version. Aside from the weight this would help to account for the difference in how the neck feels plus yours has binding which changes the feel somewhat. My old Jazzmaster had a refret with bigger wire before I got it and I like the bigger frets. Is it possible the 71 was refretted?

There is Surf east of Sepulveda.

I have a bound neck Jag as well. Even still the Jazzmaster feels different. And the refret I would say isn't possible. It looks way too pristine, the binding that is. I've seen refretted bound necks before and it isn't like this. It could have been refretted but refretted perfectly.

I noticed that some older well played fenders have thinner necks (from play wear) down in the 1st - 5 frets, They are worn in like an old t-shirt.

Enjoy your new guitar!

are there pix somewhere??

Yeah, I've noticed that from wear as well, not in my guitar though. Unfortunately.

I'll have pictures up in a week. I have the guitar torn about right now. I'm waiting on the replacement pickups.
