Permalink Choke switch on a Jag

Anybody ever use it? Is there a use for it?

Just curious, cause I've been listening to the Volcanics new CD (which is awesome BTW) and I'm not sure, but I think they may be using the choke on some songs to get that really thin sound. Either that or they are using MIJ pickups. Or it could all just be my imagination?

Anyway, whatever they're doing it really works for their sound. Maybe not for everybody or every song, but it sounds good with their style.

One day I stumbled onto a Treblemakers riff, and I put my Jag in lead circuit, neck only, strangle switch mode. It nailed the tone of the CD. I asked Zak about that, and much to my surprise, he confirmed that is what he used! I was stunned I had figured something like that out! Shocked

I'm probably using the wrong term, I think Brian may be more accurate with the strangle switch. Anyway it's the third switch next to the 2 pick-up switches, which takes out a lot of the low end, and possibly mid to give the Jag a really thin sound. Can actually be used to make a cool effect at times, as evidenced by the Treblemakers and possibly the Volcanics.

I use it sometimes for that thinner, more trad tone. My standard setup is to have both pickups on, and the choke off. However, if I want a little more treble, I'll go with just the bridge pickup and the choke on. Sounds surprisingly good to my ears.

The effect kind of sounds like what you would get with a phase switch which would reverse the wires of one of the pickups to put it out of phase with another active pickup. Is that what it actually is?

I use it all the time. One of my favorite settings is with the neck pickup on and the bridge pickup off with the choke on. I always thought that sounded just like Eddie Bertrand on "Wayward Wind". This setup always sounds better on the American Jaguars than the imports.

Whoops! Teach me to post replies while I'm working and trying to keep screaming kids in line... I meant to describe the setting that Bill was talking about -- just the neck pickup and the choke switch. Basically, making the switches into a "V" configuration for those visual types. I don't think I'd ever dare use just the bridge pickup with the choke on, that would be waaay too shrill!
