I'm planning on seeing you and the SG101 horde shortly, Jeff. Can't wait!

The food thing was in my opinion, a disappointment, and overhyped. And the bands really needed a bigger venue. But it was a great day, and an awesome way to start an incredible week of surf in California.

Thanks for the great review Bob. To say that yesterday's show was insanely successful would be a huge understatement. The Forbidden Island was absolutely packed. Yes, it would be nice if the place was bigger, but I think it is more important to have a friendly place that will put on surf shows whether the crowd is large or small. About the food carts, there were supposed to be 10 vendors, but only 5 showed up. Too bad for those that didn't show, they could have sold everything they brought.

Wow, that had to be the best surf show I've seen at Forbidden Island yet!

If you would've told me 10 years ago that I'd be seeing this high of a caliber of live surf music played in Alameda, with such a big turnout - I would've thought you were nuts! It really warms my heart.

Thanks and congrat's to all of the bands and organizers for a great show.

good show, but next time how about having the bands in the parking lot and the food indoors?

That would be wonderful, but the club is not allowed to have bands outside due to the neighbors. They can't even play music on a boom box outside.

"It starts... when it begins" -- Ralf Kilauea

This was a pretty cool deal! I was really surprised to see how many people showed up. The place was packed! Dayum! It was bittersweet for me though--I had to leave early and so ended up missing most of the bands. I really wanted to see the Wadadli Riders and the Space Rangers but I couldn't make it happen.

At the very least I got to hear Frankie and the Poolboys, who were everything you'd hope, given the caliber of that one album. A very fun set with a good clear sound. And tight! That good after only one practice? Impressive. I really enjoyed Teke Teke Teke and Finito Bandito. Nice job guys and gal.

Our Deadbeats set was pretty intense. I sweated a ton, and had a great time. Great enthusiasm from the crowd. Fun crowd aside, I really like Forbidden Island, but Forbidden Island doesn't seem to like me. This marked my third time playing there, and my third time having serious gear issues on stage. I couldn't hear the amp (one of Danny's) I was using clearly at any volume regardless of whether I was playing lead or rhythm, and on a few occasions my signal would crackle and cut out. There was lots of frantic cable switching during songs, and in the middle of one song on lead I couldn't get a signal and so resorted to just yelling out the melody Laughing . I never quite figured out the problem, but it seems it might have been the cable plugged into my guitar--a simple fix but I never got there. It was so dark (and frantic) in there for me I just kept turning up the up to hear myself better. I hope I didn't fry anything. Embarassed

Unfortunately that was all the music I got to hear. At the very least I got there early and got to meet a bunch of people. It was really cool to unexpectedly meet the guys from the Space Rangers who were all really nice. I talked a bit with Daniel their bassist--cool dude! Going into the day I was also looking forward to meeting Lorenzo and the Wadadli Riders. Luckily I got the chance to chat a tiny bit, but not more than that. It was very nice meeting you Lorenzo and Niki! At the very least we Deadbeats did get a proper chance to collectively mob and fanboy Naotaka. We talked about surf drumming, Led Zeppelin, and I recommended him some Japanese metal bands. Awesome! We got his autograph on the new Surf Coasters "Gold" album. I am happy. Cool

Best show ever! met tons of people and got to mingle around with the crowd some whove ive never met but had seen us a year ago! everybody was so friendly and just how should i say.. "chill"! i loved playing there even though it was cramped for us big boys in there haha
Space Rangers Were Awesome! i loved everything about them bass lines were great! so were the keys and muck the guitar player was incredible! Drummer kept it nice and solid they were great, so was Frankie and the poolboys! Naotaka is one of the nicest people ive ever met he was so humble and great to talk to even though we had a little language barrier. Wadadli riders were great! loved everything about them! so was Meshugga! as we all already know they always bring it! felt bad for them having to wear their big black coats in that sauna though! Overall i had a great time at this event! specially meeting all of the Space Rangers they were such nice guys! wish i coulda talked longer with them and help em out in their quest for gear in the U.S.

Also finally tried out a tiki drink haha (jeff Mai Tais are delicious) haha was about to try a navy grog but they had ran out i think Sad

And.....THANK YOU FERENC FOR HAVING US!

I should add my $.02...

The show was a great triumph for Bay Area surf music, we are so fortunate to have the support and sincere appreciation of surf music from Forbidden Island. The owner assures me this is only the beginning, though he gave me no more details. However, seeing his success with this bar and his serious commitment to high quality, I don't doubt that he will deliver whatever he's got cooking.

I can only echo everyone's sentiments about The Space Rangers and Wadadli Riders - those of you coming to the convention be sure to stay inside when these bands are playing.

Everyone involved in this surf music love fest are just the nicest people, it's obvious to me that this music draws in decent, down to earth, easy going people (the last to be excepted by some of the neurotic east coast Jewish contingent of which I'm a proud member) Oy Vey

I only wish the Deadbeats would get their act together and come down to play the convention one of these years. I've said it many times before - these are the guys to watch. Probably like what it felt watching Satan's Pilgrims in 1992 or The Space Cossacks in 1996. The talent in this band is huge and the excitement of their playing is almost palpable.

I personally felt that my playing was sub-par given the failure of my Pro Reverb to cut through the noise and the resultant stress that caused me. It seemed plenty loud at practice the night before, but once in a packed club it couldn't compete. My apologies to Ben, and to Tony who had to deal with my frustration while playing Bass live for the first time ever. I'm now switching to my Bandmaster and should have no further problem being heard. Playing with Naotaka is a real treat, an excellent drummer who knew his stuff cold the moment he got here, and just the coolest guy.

Finally I have my chance to write something!
Yeah! This first show on our tour was absolutely fun, great. Lots of people (how the hell all that people could fit in the place!) and super bands. We definitely had much much fun.

Everything has been said already about the performances. I really love them!!!

I wish I had a club like Forbidden Island in Italy, a really amazing place.
Parking lot is nice, but I like the idea of that small tiki room, with lots of people in.
It was a very easy concert, much friendly and all audience was very interested in what the band were doing. I loved that!

Thanks again!

First of all, I have to say that I feel sorry for Ben that he had to leave super early for this show (you really missed out on a lot of fun and awesome people). And Jeff I know you wanted to come up for this one. I gotta say with all honesty, this show has got to be my favorite. Not just as one of the Bands but as one of the spectators.

We got to Forbidden Island early to set up Jonathan's drums since he was gonna lend them out for all the bands to play. As soon as we got there we got to meet Naotaka. He's a super nice guy and we made him blush a couple of times with our compliments about The Surf Coasters.

First up was us and I think we played alright. Some amp problems but it was all good and we had fun (I messed up on "Arab" by The Jesters ). I especially enjoyed playing "Intruder" for Naotaka. He was flattered. After we got to talking with him some more, Santiago asked him about the next Surf Coasters tour and he said that he really wants to come back next year but the guys are busy. It might happen so keep your fingers crossed. Hopefully it does because he wants Jonathan to play drums on "Intruder" for the Surf Coasters and Naotaka will play drums with the Deadbeats on "Chasing Shadows".

For those of you waiting to see Frankie and the Poolboys in action get excited now. There set was real fun and even had some Go-Go Dancers for this one. I was drinking my first Mai Tai ever and dancin' and jumping around for their set, super fun. I was even a roadie for Tony helping out with his tangled cable and pushing up his glasses, haha. Oh and also Danny's amp. Great set and cool to hear "Marygaya". Probably my favorite Frankie tune.

Up next was a surprise short set from The Space Rangers of Germany. I really dug it, plus the organ was a nice touch. Im really glad that we got to see them play live since I wasn't expecting them for a Bay Area show. All of them are super cool guys and it was great chattin' it up with them.

After was The Waddali Riders. I dug their set as well. I hadn't really heard them so it was a nice surprise and they where pretty fun. Nice and groovy tunes with this band. I was controlling the bass drum light for their set. Looked real cool. After we got to talk with Francesco(drummer) and Nicky(bass) while waiting for our Pizza. They're super nice and sweet people. And Im really glad to have met them. And also Lorenzo after the show ended. I was surprised to hear that he's also a drummer and a huge Joe Morello fan like myself. I hope The Waddali Riders have a great time for the rest of their tour and I wish them the best of luck. Same goes for The Space Rangers.

I missed most of Meshugga's set but did go in and out every now and then to catch some tunes. By the time they played the place was super hot but it was great. Once they where done Mel came out back and he was drentched in sweat. Thats how hot it was, plus they had their coats. And the beards. Oy Vey

After the show was over I gotta admit I was a little sad about it. I had such a great time, and even a little drunk. Just a tad. But hopefully another one of these shows come up for Forbidden Island, such a great place to hang out. I had fun, enjoyed the bands, met lots of cool people. It was Great!

The Deadbeats

Thanks for the reports everybody.
I am not a huge fan of super crowded hot small club shows.
but I still wish I could have been there.

I was driving around south bay leaving flyers for the Suzy's sun. show.
then went to see Slacktone at 5pm on Sun eve.
outside in a park.
kept telling myself, this is better,
but I never believed myself.

Sad Sigh... It makes me sad to read these reviews because I know what I missed. I had just a taste... and then had it all taken away from me! Mad

I had family visiting from out of town. I wanted to get back to spend a little more time with them before taking them to the airport. They didn't go to this thing because they'd already gone to our gig the night before. Believe it or not people, there are some things more important than surf music! OMG

Yes Family always come before surf.

Jeff(bigtikidude)

Sounds like a great show! And maybe the Space Rangers are NOT on a plane...
