Cuban composer and pianist Ernesto Lecuona. Surf bands have covered his songs: Siboney (Canto Siboney), Malagueña and The Breeze And I (Andalucía).
I didn't know Slacktone covered "The Breeze and I"! That was the first time I had heard/seen their version.

The Breeze and I has an illustrious history in instro/surf music. It was done by several first wave surf bands, most notably the Challengers, Jim Messina & the Jesters and Steve & the Emperors. The latter two bands played it very fast and energetic, while the Challengers version (which appears on their third album, "On The Move - Surfing Around the World") was much more laid back, in line with Lecuona's original arrangement. I think the defining surf version was recorded by Jon & the Nightriders, on their '86 album "Stampede." It was later recorded again in that style by the Eliminators (on "UltraSonic Surf Guitars") and the Bambi Molesters (on "Dumb Loud Hollow Twang Deluxe"), both versions clearly owing a great debt to J&TN (though the Bambis mixed in some of the Challengers' touches, in particular the arpeggiating piano and slowed the song way down compared to any of the previous versions). Slacktone's version is also very simillar to the J&TN version, albeit a bit slower (though Dave was not on "Stampede" - but Dusty was). (I'm sure there have been other recordings done of this song by surf bands, but these are the ones I can think of off the top of my head.)
The song also has iconic status in Euro-instro music, being first recorded by the Fentones in '61 or '62 (faster arrangement) and then soon after by the Shadows (slower and more Latino, with a prominent orchestra and a flute part, borrowed by the Eliminators in their version). It's still common in the repertoire of many Euro-instro bands.
A classic song, no question! Lecuona really had the knack for amazing melodies. (Incidentally, the Madeira just two days ago worked up a version of a Lecuona song called "Jungle Drums" - it's time to expand the Lecuona repertoire in surf music beyond those three classics!)

I also really like The Bitch Boys' version on their Ride The Last Wave CD. Similar to the J&TNRs and Bambi Molesters versions, but with some cool additional time changes as well.

I love how dave adds in little personal inflections to cover songs,
but it never takes away from the song, if nothing else it ,makes them better.
even his little mistakes sound fun, and intended.
the man is a genius.

in case I didn't mention.
How great of a weekend was that?
wow!! those vids bring back memories, and it was only a few weeks ago.
Thanks again Bill.
I think I had Heat Stroke and lost some of my memory of that weekend.
and I didn't even drink that much.
Rory( The Event Guy) was very happy with my band suggestions, and my djing for the weekend. I think we will be working together again.
Hope to see some Sg101 members at this next year.
its like Tiki Oasis, but way smaller, less crowded, cheaper, and a ton of fun.

I listened to an alternative chilledout Slacktone set on a podcast a couple of years ago. I'm guessing this is the same kind of set?
Anyways, i'm enjoying watching these youtubes so compliments to the camera man.

Thanks guys. Slacktone can always be counted on to tailor their set for a particular event or venue. This set was for a mostly hung over Tiki/Exotica crowd poolside at 11 a.m., with the thermometer hovering around 110 degrees. I unfortunately had to edit out a few songs I tried to film holding the camera because my hands were a little, ahem, "unsteady"!
Yeah Jeff, the entire weekend was fantastic. I think you guys put together the perfect combination of surf and exotica acts, and your poolside dj'ing set the mood for everyone. I can't thank you, Rory, and the rest of the organizers enough. It was nothing but flowing Mai Tais and smiling faces for three straight days! Even my two teenage daughters who often get tired of dad dragging them to see bands wanted to know if we were coming back again next year. I gotta say that's a definite YES!

The 2nd set of Slacktone was more upbeat, and way more originals of theirs.
Bill you need a tripod for your uh, morning after hands.

Nothing a couple more Mai Tais couldn't have fixed . Unfortunately we had to load up and head home. Actually it was my first time out with that dinky camera and I found that holding those things steady under any circumstances is WAY harder than with a full-size cam. At any rate, tripod has been purchased so no more worries!

This is off topic, but I was considering getting one of those little video cameras after seeing the results that Bill got with his and Morphball got with his Flip on the Space Cossacks. I've read that they are hard to keep steady. I was looking at the Kodak zi8; it has a tripod mount. It also has image stabilization, but it does supposedly suck the battery down when you have it turned on. I'll start a new thread about this soon.

I have a Sony DSC - T77. Very trick but it's so slim it's like holding a bar of soap, battery runs out very quickly.
If i was shooting vids of bands i'd go for a monopod.. you can also use it like a walking stick or chase young ladys around the swimming pool with it.
