Besame Mucho - opinions on the mix

I wasn't sure if I was hearing a third guitar part on the right or if it was an echo/reverb/crosstalk kind of thing. If it was my mixing console, or even if it was within reach, I'd pan those drums hard right to see what it sounds like, especially in light of the recent thread about stereo/mono mixes. There's no harm in playing with expectations. Oh yeah, I also like it! RK — RK Top

There's no harm in playing with expectations. Oh yeah, I also like it! RK I actually did try a version with the drums panned hard right - inspired by the Ventures version, which does the same. For some reason I didn't like it here, though I'm not opposed to it in theory. There are two bass parts - the lead bass and a regular bass part that is more less mimicking the spy-sounding riff. Then there's the slightly overdriven, tremolo'd guitar part that's strumming/arpeggiating the chords. All of the guitars are recorded in stereo, which might the cross talk you're hearing. I've been listening to the Bambi Molesters latest quite a bit lately, and enjoying the hard left-right separation of the two guitars. If I had any criticism it would be that the mix feels a little "right heavy" which is slightly distracting to me. Is the lead bass panned a little to the right? I'd like to hear it with the lead bass centered and let the other bass (right) balance out the guitar on the left. The mix levels sound pretty good to me. Cool tune. Edit: DOH! Burn to disc and play in a medium-quality, factory car stereo. If you like what you hear, move on to the laptop speakers. If not, recycle. That said, I would compress and harmonically excite the baritone (Bass VI?) track until it is prominent enough to carry the melody, but not so much that it loses all dynamics or gets noisy. The human ear naturally wants to hear melodies in a higher frequency band, so you have your psychoacoustic challenge laid out for you, for certain.
