i find myself stuck in a rut at times. i'm always looking for a new tune to figure out. the martin cilia 'revenge of the surf guitar' has backing tracks which has been really enjoyable for me to play along with.
my problem where i live is there's not many people to play with or if i do find someone to play with they loose patience with me because they are much better players or not interested in the tunes i want to play. plus there's no one here that gives lessons, except bluegrass. (i can't win)

Wow, just checked your vids on Youtube. Man, you're doing the job: sound, backtracks, playing and footages are neat and great.
You surely got off the rut !
Thanks! Maybe there will actually be something original on there one day.

Reminds me of punk tune. "You're in a rut, you've gotta get out of it"
I'd say, keep your guitar accessible at home, don't pack it away in a case.
Drink some water! - dehydration will contribute to that rut feeling.

If I'm in a rut the last thing I want to do is make guitar playing even more boring by practicing scales and exercises.
Absolutely -- IF the thing you're in a rut about is playing the same scales and exercises all the time. But the OP said he plays the same pieces all the time, and his technique isn't progressing.
If you play the same exercises all the time, you stop thinking about them. On the one hand, that's good, because you can do it in your sleep. On the other, it's bad, because you aren't' concentrating on improvement.

I find that it helps to go through my playlist periodically and toss out one or two songs that are boring me.
Then I try to find new songs that are really interesting and work on learning them. This keeps it fresh.
Also, it helps to try to get new sounds / tone out of the equipment. So, I sell amps and guitars to fund new ones that bring something different.
Amongst all that gear turmoil, the one constant is the G-Reverb, which is going nowhere. You could change the speaker on your Gverb Dan, if you wanted something new.

I find myself in a rut too at times. Sometimes you just have to take a breather and walk away and then come back to it. Definitely concentrate on learning new, exciting and different songs to mix it up. At home I always have my guitar on a stand to pick up on impulse too.
Maybe try a different style on the guitar like rockabilly and rock. It helps.
I also look at different youtube videos of the different surf groups to watch their style and fingering. There's certainly alot of them to watch.
Also, buy a bunch of different groups that you haven't listened to yet.
I bet you can get tons of recomendations from all of us. ONe group I always go back to listen to is The Penetrators...Excellent stuff.

I do the "try a different instrument" quite a bit.
I have a mandolin, a keyboard, an acoustic guitar and now an electric upright bass.
And a cardboard box two-string upright bass which is very fun.
Also still have the electric guitar and bass.
The mandolin surprisingly enough is proving to be a big challenge and an inspiration for new guitar and bass playing lately.
Variety keeps it spicy for me.

Listen to a wide variety of music. Don't analyse it, just try to enjoy listening, enjoy the music.

Why don't you try to buy a new cheap guitar?

I've been playing for 34 years, and I find I get in a rut after after six or seven years, sometimes a bit longer. I've moved back and forth between rock music and bluegrass at these intervals. I got in a rut last year after playing in bluegrass bands for about the last ten years. Stopped playing completely for about six months.
When I got back into playing, I went mostly electric again, but I wanted to do something different. My electric guitar playing has always been very heavily influenced by Neil Young, but as much as I love that style of music, I needed to play something different. I discovered instrumental surf music (well, I had heard it before, but never thought of playing it) about a month ago and I'm having a blast! Can't remember when I had this much fun playing music. I'm not a great guitarist, but I do enjoy playing and recording.
I've been so inspired by surf music that I've started writing songs again; the last song I wrote before was in 2001. I've written five songs in the last six weeks or so. One reggae song, called Charles the Hammer, and four surf songs -- Rogue Wave, Carl the Tiger, Big Mofo Spider, and Katie's Last Wave.
BTW, I love surfguitar101.com too!
