Hi
I've seen many posts here asking for tabs,
also checked various "tab sites" for surf
related tunes (Shadows & Ventures), and
hear a lot of "you must train you ear".
So, the only option left are scores.
Do you know any good source of written surf music (classics)?
Do "surf musician" write their songs as scores?
I have also checked those "music sheet" on the web, but cannot
find something interesting.
(All these aside from Hal-Leonard Books)
I don´t need this mainly for playing them as covers, but I would like
to use them in my guitar class, it is not funny to learn with Metallica song!

Quite interesting thread you've started here, IMHO.
I consider I wasn't born with any particular musical skill and I've never had any formal education in music. Because of this, maybe, I feel a bit lack of confidence in taking musics by ear myself (although sometimes I can surprise myself). Therefore, tabs are considerably time saving when I'm trying to play anything - I used them more like rough guidelines than the ultimate resource.
Another problem I tend to find, and one example of this was the recent trend about the pyramids' penetration key (F# or G), is that for any odd reason, loads of records from the 50's and 60's sound like the instruments weren't tuned in A 440Hz (probably different reasons for different cases - tapes sped up, more confortable keys for sax players...). This turns the task of taking musics by ear quite hard for me.

I would suggest this Hal-Leonard book by a guy named Fred Sokolow. Accurate transcriptions and with standard musical notation and tab, plus interesting background on the songs. Its the best I've found for famous guitar instrumentals. Not necessarily "surf" but its certainly related and has some great songs.

This book looks much better than Surf Guitar Play-Along. Thanks for recommending it.

"Guitar Pro" software will transcribe tab into standard musical notation. I'm sure there are other similar software packages out there as well.
Of course this assumes you have some reliable tab to start with and are comfortable with setting up the timing.

Well there you go! I didn't know about that one. I only tried a trial version of Guitar Pro so I'll check out TuxGuitar. Thanks

with Number9.
GP ver.5. can really be a helping hand at learning songs. There aren't a lot of surf songs , but you can find 1st wave songs sometimes.

I've got an old Ventures songbook from like '63 and it has alot of their early songs up till about Yellow Jacket. Anyways all the songs are only notation, no tab and all three parts(guitar, rhythm, and bass) are in a treble clef.
You can find it on ebay on occasion but I wouldn't mind emailing it to you if you wanted to check it out.

I use guitar pro all the time, i find it works better than tabs for some songs... Has helped me with bloodstains, diamondhead.. and i have the wedge gp3.. BUT i have ZERO chance of ever playing that correctly:) After 25 years i have given up on playing by ear... no matter what people say, if you don't have it, you dont have it:)
