Indeed! Interesting to note that probably not very much jazz was played on a Jazzmaster... it is without a doubt a surf guitar.

Say Norm, I have an internet friend looking for an old Surfer issue with the ad for something like "Dan Wallace's Hawaii Holiday Summer School".

He went to the Islands for the session then and hoped I could scan the ad from one of my old Surfer issues. Well, I don't have many anymore. I thought I'd ask you.

Jetpack: I always thought your CD cover was bitchin!

Bob, I don't have many issues from '68 but I'll take a look. I will surely let you know if I find that article.

Fender goes British Invasion in this ad from the March '67 issue of SURFER. Those darn moptops! Notice the double-decker bus and the caption "Shot on location in London, England". The musical landscape had obviously changed as reflected in this ad.

I love that little band in the Challengers ad. I did this dumb gif animation about 13 years ago...

I have a bunch of Severson's SURFER mags from the early to mid-sixties and thought some of you may dig seeing some of the old ads and articles. I will post more periodically.

My first entry is a Fender ad from Sept 1964. Interesting to note that Fender wants you to know that they make "music to surf by" considering the Beatles were on Ed Sullivan on Feb 9, 1964. Hmm, maybe surf music hung in there longer than we thought??? Awesome.

Geez, who ever heard of using a hot chick to promote their product...what a waste...

Hey! I just got an email from one of the models in these ads, Edie Carhart, check it out!!!!

Hey, that's me in those ads - the 3 with the girl in the 1960s bikini. We shot them mostly in Laguna Beach where I lived and surfed. They were all taken in the mid 60s - not the late 60s because I graduated from HS in 1965 and did those a couple of years before.
Edie
PS When I graduated I was a mermaid at Disneyland - check out MouseChat.com for Disney Mermaids 1966

I think this is the Mermaid link Edie mentioned:

Now, that IS VERY cool! I remember those subs.

This is Noel. Reverb's at maximum an' I'm givin' 'er all she's got.

Thanks for posting that Brian.
The Subs are still there.
But it's become Nemo's journey now.
And the Mermaids in the middle of the lagoon are long gone.

Maybe you can retroactively make her a RFB girl Whorehay?

Another email and link with photos from Edie:

Fender was really fun - I was about 15 at the time and surfed avidly then moved to the North Shore. Still have the ocean in my veins!

Very cool that Edie found this thread! The little surfer girl, Fender ad model, and Disney mermaid...that pretty much makes her an icon of the '60s Southern California culture we celebrate in this music. My first visit to Disneyland was when we were living in S. Pasadena in '65-66. I loved the Submarine ride, and now I like to think she was one of those waving mermaids.

Another photo from Edie, this one from the North Shore:

I love this thread. Smile

I would have been about 10 years too late to see her at Disneyland around '75, but I remember Submarine Voyage well, it was a great attraction. I was lucky enough to have seen both versions of the Haunted Mansion too!
