Permalink New Squid Vicious CD in the works!

New Topic

Anybody remember my old band Squid Vicious? www.myspace.com/squidvicioustx We were active from 1995 to 2001. In 2000, we released our first CD At War with the Whale. Shortly after that, we began sessions for a second album. This album was geared more in the experimental/psych direction. If you ever heard our song Under the Green from the Fiberglass Jungle comp, that'll give you somewhat of an idea. Anyway, back then, we almost finished the album, and then our engineer's deck (1/2" 16-track) broke down. If you've ever used one of those, then you know how prone they are to breaking down. Gradually, he lost track after track until he was down to half a dozen. Then the band split up and we all got busy with other stuff and other bands and such. All along, he tried to get his deck fixed. No dice. Then it sat there for years. Finally, last year I started looking around Austin for someone with a similar deck. After close to a year of searching, I found a studio. So I brought him the tapes (three reels). He had them baked (tapes that old have to be baked), and then on Tuesday night, we transferred them over to hard disk. I'm going to do some editing and create new track sheets, and then I will take them over to the Brain Machine (my usual studio now) for touchups and mixing. Tracking is essentially done, though we may do a little cleanup or add percussion or something. Anyway, I hope to have a finished album sometime in the fall. Will advise.

Hahaha! Bonus points if you can tell me which movie that's from.

If you're expecting another CD of surf/hotrod instrumentals (from Squid Vicious), you'll definitely be disappointed. When we get some decent rough mixes, I'll post mp3s on myspace.

Of course, if you do want another CD of surf/hotrod instrumentals, check out Spy Car Mechanic by The Nematoads...

Gosh, i wouldn't have a clue, i'll pass that one to someone else!
A few years ago when i knew even less about surf music than i know now.. I was allured towards Squid Vicious At War With The Whale because of the name. It was a bit of a introduction to modern American surf.

According to Google, the only reference to that phrase on the entire internet is in this thread, so I'm guessing the movie is pretty obscure!
Looking forward to hearing Squid Vicious again, by the way.
Incidentally, not all old tapes have to be baked. Certain batches of tape have not survived the ravages of time particularly well (for technical reasons that are somewhat beyond me) and they need it. Some do not.

Dang! Google is good! And fast. The quote/sample is from The Hot Rod Gang from 1958: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0051741/ Stars John Ashley, who was in a lot of B movies, a few episodes of Beverly Hillbillies, and some of the Beach Party movies. Also, Gene Vincent is there as well.

Our tapes were in good shape, having been stored upright and in an air conditioned house. Still, the engineer recommended baking just in case.

Told you it was obscure!

Hey! It's been only an entire year, but we're finally getting back to those Squid tracks. We're going into the studio tonight to lay out the digital tracks and then begin mixing. It's finally happening! I'll post some rough mixes when we get to that point.
