Hi!
I'm going to a conference in Helsinki, Finland in a couple of weeks, and I wondered if there is some concerts or clubs worth visiting while being in the land of rautalanka?
First time visit, so I'm looking forward to it regardless, but it would be the icing on the cake if I could pick up some native rocking at the same time.

I checked the offerings in Helsinki, didn't find much rautalanka then but I'd suggest that you take a train to Tampere (abt. 150-200 kms from Helsinki) on 10th and go to the Viikinsaaren Maihinnousu 1-day festival there. Among the performers is The Charades, which I strongly recommend.
Viikinsaari is a small island right outside Tampere and it can be accessed by a boat from the center. A nice environment, and a traditional rautalanka-oriented festival. Played there two years ago myself.

Thanks for the tip, but I'm afraid it will be a bit far for this trip. Are there any cafés, clubs or shops worth visiting?

Best and the most legendary rock club in Finland is Tavastia: http://www.tavastiaklubi.fi/index_en.php You can see their upcoming shows here: http://www.tavastiaklubi.fi/index_en.php?group=2
Shops... the best vintage guitar shop here is Kitarapaja: www.kitarapaja.com
Please feel free to ask if you need to know anything more =)

Hey, I just got information that I will be playing in Helsinki on friday, July 9th. It's not surf music though - it's the other band I am, Joey Luumäki & Tappajatomaatit. Very much Ramones-influenced punk rock.
The venue is Semifinal, the downstairs/basement of Tavastia club. Feel free to come & say hi if you decide to come
