Permalink Ed Big Daddy Roth documentary

New Topic
Goto Page: 1 2 3 Next

A friend just told me about a documentary he saw last night on Ovation, about Ed Roth with music by the Torquays (Ghost Rider in the Sky). Has anyone seen this? Duff? They showed the Surfite and all things Roth. He said Rat Fink was a reaction against another famous Southern California rodent.

I think your friend was talking about Tales of the Rat Fink, I'm pretty sure the Torquays had an appearance in it (it was an outdoor festival Ed Roth was signing at a few months prior to his passing), but the soundtrack was actually by the Sadies. I highly recommend this movie if you have not seen it yet:

Soundtrack by the Sadies.
If you look really hard at the crowd scene while the Torquays are playing you can see Big Tiki Dude for a second.

As an electronics hobbyist I try to push that movie on a lot of my friends. Not that he had much to do with electronics, but it's the same sort of spirit

Ed Roth's "Rat Fink" goes way beyond cars, electronics, music, movies... it's really a whole state of mind. There are really two types of people in the world, Mickey Mice and Rat Finks... I'm reminded of that fact every day when I talk to people too.

Just noticed this thread and thought I'd chime in being that I'm obsessed with all things Roth/Rat Fink. "Tales of the Ratfink" gets an "A" for effort but fell a bit short for me. Naturally, I had high expectations. I didn't like John Goodman narrating it as if he was Roth, and the talking cars made it seem kind of trite too. Roth is portrayed as kind of a Hot Rod Santa Claus. He was more subversive than the film makes him out to be. Look magazine called him "the supply sergeant for The Hell's Angels". He caused an uproar that may have cost him his job at Revell by selling German helmets and iron crosses to kids as "surfer's helmets" and "surfer's crosses"!!! The famous "Battle of Maywood" as recalled by Robert Williams where Roth and just a couple of his guys fended off an entire outlaw motorcycle club is the stuff of legend. Wish they would have had more of this kind of stuff in the film. That said, I still enjoyed the film and you should still check it out. I applaud the fact that it was made at all.

You wouldn't believe how much I am learning on this forum. Rat Finks and Lost Beach Boys among others,

Cool!

Here's one of my favorite pics of Roth. He was truly a magician with steel, rubber, chrome and paint and one of the great artistic treasures of the 20th century.

Speaking of Roth's The Outlaw... starting THIS WEEKEND at the PETERSON AUTO MUSEUM, Ed Roth's creation will be on display as part of Peterson's Fantasies in Fiberglass exhibit. Don't miss it!

Back in the mid-90's, Lace (Sensor) Music Products licensed Ed Roth's creations and produced a line of "Rat Fink" guitars and amps. I was surprized that they weren't a huge hit.

Considering that the film was made to appeal to a modern day audience, I think it was really good. I too didn't care too much for Goodman personifying Roth or the talking cars but thought it was cool that Brian Wilson did the Surfite now that those were included in the script.

For anyone interested in more on Ed Roth and his art, I can recommend all three books below:

I remember seeing one of the amps at the guitar store. It had a switch, almost like a phaser/vibrato mix, for the Rat Fink tone!! I should have bought it just because.

Just thought I'd post this again for those of you who live in the L.A. area or plan to visit in the next few weeks... starting THIS WEEKEND at the PETERSON AUTO MUSEUM, Ed Roth's "Outlaw" will be on display as part of Peterson's Fantasies in Fiberglass exhibit. The Peterson is an amazing car museum, probably the best in the world. You should check it out if you've never been.
