Permalink Bright Switch on a Fender Amp?

New Topic

Does anyone actually engage this for Surf Music?

A lot of people do. Nobody should though.... that bright switch really should only be used in very special circumstances... not of which occur in surf music.

Really? That switch activates the bright capacitor in the channel! It's great if you have a dark sounding guitar ie Les paul or a Humbucking pickup.. Yeah I have used it and it's a nice option at times.. Perhaps at lower volumes and you need to cut a bit more.. However, that option is not available on the older brown face Fenders.. It's really up to your sound if you need it or perhaps you simply need more high's? Watch out because you could kill with that switch!! LOL!!! Laughing

Yea, it seems to be overkill with it, not bad at lower volumm, but still pretty harsh highs. I have it on a HRD amp, a bit brittle.

Then what is the point of owning a Les Paul or guitar with humbuckers? I have a friend who is always trying to make any amp or any guitar sound like a certain tone... I just don't see the point...

Jake, I'm just stating what the bright switch does.. Not putting down Humbuckings or Les Pauls! The point is, it just simply brightens the signal thats all.. Some guitars are really dark for Surf or contry or even Jazz... I think the question was originaly about how does the bright switch work with Fender Amps? Something like that..

I know! I was just playing devil's advocate.

I'm baffled by the question. Do you own only 1 surf record by 1 band? There are a wide variety of tones in surf music. There isn't a rule book that says "thou shalt only use the following settings..."

A HRD is not really comparable to all other Fender amps anyway. Other factors like guitar, speakers, pickups, etc. will play a role.

Perhaps your post meant to say "Hmmm, the bright switch on MY amp with MY guitar isn't all that pleasing to me."

Or I need to learn how to type on the internets! I can come across as direct. Yet I just like to toss ideas out there.

Jake, believe me you do!! I really like you style bro!! Keep it up...

I use the BRIGHT switch sometimes and the DEEP switch at other times: I have a Bassman.

I always have the bright switch on.

What does it do? I'll be damned if I know, I just know that I keep it switched on.

I think the purpose of it is to allow some treble frequencies to bypass the volume control when the volume is turned down. Thus you may not notice it if you have the amp cranked.

If you look at a schematic you'll see the switch puts a capacitor across the volume resistor.

That's only because I told you your amp would blow up ala the movie Speed, if you ever turned if off.

That's also why I never let my metronome go anywhere below 160 bpm.
