And their appearance in the movie Surf Party (1964), even though it's "aped", strongly suggests that they played their surf stuff live in America too...

One thinks they should at least have performed "Baja" live in 1963-64 since it reached #94 on Billboard and #5 on both KRLA and KFWB in California. However, one can also wonder why there aren't any instros included on their two 1964 U.S. live albums.

It would be interesting to hear what you and Jeff think of the live Astronauts surf instros since I and probably everyone else here never have heard what those sounded like live. Did they play them faster than the studio versions? How did the rhythm reverb guitar fare compared to the studio recordings? Did the Japanese crowd go wild?

I believe it's because those US live albums were released post British Invasion... Yes all surf roads end with those pesky Moptops! And since the Astronauts were mostly a vocal Frat/R&B band (even though today they are more remembered and loved for their amazing surf recordings), it is apparent they wanted to sing R&B flavored stuff. That is apparent in their other movie appearances, Out of Sight (1966) and Wild Wild Winter (1966). However in '65 in Japan it's a different story. The Ventures popularity wasn't affected by the British Invasion as much, thus explaining the live surf recordings in '65.

The live in Japan '65 stuff sounds pretty close to the originals, though not exact. And being that it's a Japanese audience from that time they aren't exactly going nuts. Even the Beatles Japan shows from that time were quite subdued compared to their out of control shows in the US and everywhere else.

Not necessary the case for Astronauts Orbit Kampus which was released in February 1964. "Baja" was the Astronauts biggest hit ever and just 6 months old at that time.

It wasn't really a serious question but I definitely agree that most other countries crowds were significantly wilder at the time. I have two mid 60's Beatles Tokyo shows and as I recall the audiences are mainly just waving handkerchiefs towards the stage, haha.

"Astronauts Orbit Kampus" is a Frat Rock themed album. The title of the album and selection of covers like Linda Lou, Bony Moronie, Diddy Wah Diddy, Greenback Dollar make that apparent. Thus, the lack of "Baja" or any surf. The super high-energy cover of the R&B tune Sticks And Stones is my favorite cut on that album. Also, as you mentioned, Baja only reached #94 on the Billboard charts. Hardly enough of a hit to keep pushing it on a new album 6 months later. 6 months was a musical eternity in those days because trends changed so quickly, and plenty of time for a single that only reached #94 to fade away. I strongly believe the Astronauts just wanted to be a vocal R&B group. But like most people, I too like them primarily for the two surf/hot rod albums, Surfin' and Competition Coupe.

Just picked up the reissue CD and would say the main difference from the studio versions is the complete lack of their trademark reverb rhythm guitar.

I would be quiet surprised if the album was actually recorded in front of a live audience. The crowd sounds totally canned and the band doesn't say a single word between songs.

dick dale, the chantays, the astronauts, the surfaris and the ventures. not necessarily in that order. the beatles showed up and surf kinda went away that week. was very strange to me at that time. 6th or 7th grade i think, the beatles on ed sullivan. Rolling Eyes

Enjoying the surf,sun and sand!!

I agree. And the drumming feels different too. Hope you didn't fork out too much cash for that CD, Klas. I didn't say it was great. But for me it's worth having nevertheless.

You could very well be right, but what if it is the legendary sedate Japanese audience plus the band didn't talk because they can't speak Japanese? Wink

I thought about mentioning the drumming as well but came to the conclusion that the reason it sounds different is because of the loud tambourine on top of the drum beat. I think Jim Gallagher's playing is basically the same as his characteristic style on the original studio versions. I only paid $9.99 + $7.99 shipping from China, so no worries. I agree that the album isn't totally great but it definitely has a place in my collection because of what it is.

One would think that the band should at least have said "thank you" after some of the songs if it had been a real show. Wink Oh, and by "canned" I meant that the sounds of the crowd appears to have been added afterwards. Fake live albums were pretty common in the 60's.

These are my picks, although I might throw Nobuhiro above Terry as the best guitarist of the day.
