Gardena is in SoCal-not far from Hawthorne (hmmm, who's from there).
Bet these guys used to hang out at Hogan's Music.
Nine members, huh? You're obviously not in it for the money. Good luck and keep us posted.

Hi Elreydlp -

You're right. We are not in this for the money. However, all of our current gigs are pay (we picked up Oceanside Long Board yesterday - August 14, 2010). We all have real jobs, e.g., dentistry, law, choir director, etc.

Let me share some of the past with you. In the spring of 1960 I was at the Rinky Dink Ice Cream Parlor in Balboa, CA playing my fairly new jazzmaster and singing folk songs (!). Two gentlemen came in and asked if they could bring in their gear and sit in. I said "Sure". It turns out that these guys had been at the Rinky Dink the week before. They did country/western (!).

Within 24 hours, we had a new genre of music! The two gentlemen were Dick Dale and his cousin, Ray. I was with Dick for three and a half years after that. I left because Dick was going on tour, and I was expanding a family business.

Later,

Nick O'Malley

Welcome Nick,

is Norm still in the band?
I heard his wife was having some bad health issues.
Hope all is ok with her.

Hi Nick,
Welcome to SG101! I am sure we would love to hear any stories you care to pass on about the birth of surf music, playing in Balboa and at the Rendezvous, working with Dick Dale.... Anything.

Good luck getting the band together,
Ferenc

Hi Ferenc -

Here is a little background.

In the spring of 1960 I stopped by the Rinky Dink Ice Cream Parlor in Balboa. The manager asked me to bring in my Jazzmaster and sing some folk songs(!). So I did. After I did a couple of songs, two guys came in. They asked if they could bring in their gear and jam with me. I said "Sure!" They were Dick Dale and his cousin, Ray Samra. They had been at the Rinky Dink the week before and played country music(!). In 24 hours we had a new sound, and we knew we were hot!

Dick had a Fender Stratocaster. I previously had a Strat and discovered that one could set the pick-up position switch between two positions and get a new sound, so there were five positions instead of three. I taught this to Dick. He adopted it, and later practically everyone with a Strat found out about it, including the Fender Company.

Later we moved from the Rinky Dink to the Rendezvous Ballroom about a block away (I'll find out exactly when we made this move the next time I talk to John Blair). There were six or seven of us by then. Most of our audience were surfers, and their dance became known as the surfers' stomp. And our music was called surf music! I remember that one of several things distinctive about our music was a front beat instead of a back beat.

In the beginning we were doing mostly vocals. After we started at the Rendezvous we were encouraged to do more instrumentals, so we did!

While we were still at the Rendezvous, Dick asked me to have my Jazzmaster painted light blue, so I did. I still have it and still play it with a smaller group (2) called "Surf Geezers" and a larger group (9) called "Surf Rockers". Dick knows about Surf Rockers and has played with us at HBISM!

I'll tell you where Surf Rockers are playing (pay gigs) in my next SG101mail! And I'll give you more history.

Surf's Up!

Nick

Hi Hlieboff59 -

FYI there are some photographs out there showing me using a prototype of the reverb (it looks like a small plain box). Later, I got the first reverb out the door from Fender which I shared with Dick Dale until he got his own. Then I lent it to the son of my then-current girl friend and never got it back. Oh, well.

I used to ... but where were they before Hawthorne Blvd?

Hogan's Music? How funny. I used to get booted out of that place on a regular basis after school for playing their guitars and never buyin' nothin'. ;D
I can't remember one of the owner's name, but he had a salt and pepper afro with glasses and was a real A-Hole!
Good times!

Be careful following the masses. Sometimes the "M" is silent...........................
